Burning Smell In 2002 Protege5

Does anyone else get a burning smell when they run the air conditioner and the heater. Sometimes i can smell it from outside too.

pr5owner October-11th-2002 03:09 PM

mine smells like an old man... i think its condensation in the ac vents or something.. try setting your blower on MAX and your A/C on for like.. maybe 20 mins? force all the crap out, make sure your d00rs are all open too

i dunno about a burning smell, but sometimes when i drive my car harder than usual it starts to smell like sulphur inside... i still never figured out why it does that...

apache36 October-11th-2002 08:59 PM

that sulphur smell is your cat. but i'm not too sure about the burning smell your talking about

Chumpman October-11th-2002 09:07 PM

is there anything i can do ta either get rid of, or reduce the sulphur smell from the cat? or is it just somethin i hafta live with... cuz we have some pretty fun twisty highways in BC, and whenever I head up to Whistler i like to push my car to its limits and it always ends up smellin like rotten eggs!!! hahahha! :p

apache36 October-13th-2002 02:35 PM

drivin' hard in the twisties creates heat which is trasnfered to the exhaust, and as you can figure out for yourself heats up the cat. welcome to the wonderful world of four bangers.

Buring Smell

Yeah I'm getting a smell too. I just bought my 2002 Protege ES 2 months ago (has about 2000 miles now). And this past week I started noticing this burning smell too (like burnt leaves). It got really bad today so I decided to call my dealer (i have a warranty so they won't charge me a dime to get it fixed).

The smell comes when the engine gets warm, and it goes away when the car is moving, but comes back when it stops at a light or something.

When I opened up the hood it looked like there were some leaves debris (tree leaves since its fall time) all around the compartment. Some of the debris looked like it was burnt... so I think it may be that. Dunno but I'll give you word when I get it checked out by the dealer later this week. I'm starting to get some bad feelings about mazdas...

now that it's fall.. i'm gonna go burn some leaves to figure out what you guys mean by burnt leaf smell.

For me.. I smell rotten eggs (sulfur).

pro5girlie November-12th-2002 05:07 PM

Yeah, I get the burning smell every once in a while. I thought it was from the pine needles that friggin collect in my hood. But they're not in an area to get toasted. Also, I get the sulphur smell. I am just heading up Avon Mountain (not really a mountain but it's kinda steep), and the sulfur starts. Ick. I drive the car hard on the highway sometimes, but it never smells. Funny.

Chumpman November-13th-2002 03:09 AM

Does anyone know if the rotten eggs (Sulfur) smell goes away with time? or am i doomed to nausea everytime i gun it on the highways?

dynamho November-13th-2002 06:05 PM

Yeah, I get the eggy smell when I gun the car also. Try setting your ventilation to recirculate next time you gun your car. It might work. I haven't tried it yet.

premdrumusr November-13th-2002 07:43 PM

I get the burning smell every once in a while in my foci. I know its the clutch cause anytime i try and go somewhere with it some idiot ricer kid trys to race me which leads me to speed shifting and crap and i burn my clutch. Ahh gotta love the smell of a ricer getting eaten alive and the clutch... heh.. yea smells pretty bad so I've learned to take it easy. I know that didn't help and probably not what ur smelling but it could be? possibly?

Maxx Mazda November-14th-2002 12:12 AM

If you get all up on your car frequently as I do, the sulfer smell will eventually go away. Keep the cat temp high constantly, and carbon won't collect in the first place. If you don't heat it up enough, it collects in the cat, and when you gun it, is burnt off and stinks like rotten ass. Just drive the car hard on a daily basis and it won't smell. Otherwise, you're stuck with it.

are there such things as cat cleaners?
