Brake Dust
 

Hey, i Got my MP5 a few day's ago and already my wheels are covered in brake dust..

Is this normal for the first few hundred KM's??

or should i get this checked out at the dealrer??

Well, isnt it better to ride the brakes than the clutch? I just started driving stick in December (when I bought my P5). I have brake dust also all over my wheels, usally within a day or so after I was the wheels.

Maybe it's just driver but my Pro has put out less brake dust than ANY of my previous cars. I basically clean a very fine film of dust off my wheels probably once a week if that...

Think it has something to do with manual, and the fact that I never use my brakes ;)

same here......I have very little dust build up....of course I have been driving a manual transmission for over 25 yrs or so....As Jessie said....don't ride either....its NOT good for either of them. Use your engine to do some of the breaking for you, that is normal with a manual tranny....and it saves on your breaks as well.

I wouldn't know!!! I love my car so much I wipe it down everyday sometimes twice. I never have brake dust on it.

but funny you should mention it....I was just out driving around our neighborhood and noticed one of the cheerleaders signs in their front yard...and HER name is jessie! :{D

Anyone use Amoral Wheel Cleaner? Sams Clubs has a 48oz jug of it for $8.99. Its a great deal compared to the 16oz that Walmart carries for $4.50. I am just wondering if that stuff is safe on the wheels for long-term use??

I use Armour all tire cleaner. Works great. I have never been let down by armour all stuff.

Buy a descent wheel cleaner with a known name behind it and then you can have peace of mind.

I've been using Eagle One's wheel cleaner the past couple years and it works great...it might cost a couple bucks more but it's worth it.

Evilhomer, I think it's pretty normal that you're noticing more brake dust then usually since you've only had your car a couple weeks. It seems that brake pads tend to develope extra dust until they have some wear on them.

I've had my P5 almost a year now, and have never even used any type of wheel cleaner. I just wash them with the car, and usually take a rag to them with the soap solution, making sure to dig into the "groove" around the edge of the rim to get all the crap out of there.

I've never needed a wheel cleaner - they clean up just fine. And if I get some of that "tar" crap on them (or anywhere on the car), a little bit of Orange Clean takes it off better than anything I have ever used - short of using gasoline ;) That stuff is really great for tar and bug juice - I just use a small drop of the concentrate - undiluted - on a towel and spots come off with almost no effort or rubbing. Orange Clean also works really well as a car wash - just add a little to the soap, and your P5 will come very clean. But only if you are going to wax it next, because I believe the Orage Clean strips the wax, at least somewhat.

Brake dust is normal. Some pads tend to shed more than others. My front rims look black a week after I wash them. The best thing I have found for cutting through that crap is Simple Green...you can get it anywhere.

I drive normal, the brake dust is normal for the first few hundred miles. Now there is hardly any.

I use eagle one to clean the rims, and sometimes the crap on my exhaust.

As for Armor All I wouldn't use that crap on my wheels let alone my interior. Nasty silicon crap, Dunlop on their website says not to. Can start to break down rubber and vinyl, so they say. I use a good leather protectant like the Tannery on the dash and a different one on my leather seats.

I feel the same way about Armor All in your interior, I made two mistakes with that mess...

Shined up my steering wheel with it once. That's a big No-No, couldn't steer, hands slipping everywhere...

Shined up my dash one night, and it rained like crazy for about 10 minutes. When it rains around here, the humidity doesn't leave with the rain, so it will sit in nice reflective puddles on the road for hours. It was night and I swear the combination of the Armor-All making my dash a mirror, and the reflective roads nearly got me into numerous accidents
