Bike Rail anyone?

Well hello everyone! I'm not new to the board but my last email account gave me the boot cuz I graduated. So I've closed the book on the short-lived "zoom-zoom adam" and changed my alias to something a little more descriptive of what I do (I'm a chemist, of course!) Anyways, I am still loving my 2003 silver p5 and I love checking the posts and hearing what others think of this sweet little ride. I've put 2k on it since June 6th. Hard to believe! So here's a little dillema I have and maybe some one can give me some direction. I have a typical mountain bike with a regular guage round tube frame and a quick release front wheel. I have the roof rack on, but I don't have the rail for the bike. I was wondering if I can buy any kind of bike rail, be it fork mount or standard mount. I've seen bike rails on ebay for cheap, and they say they fit any kind of roof rack. Is this true or will I have to suck it up and pay some attrocious amount at the dealer? Thanks for any and all input!

I use a Yakima Lock-jaw rack to carry my bike. It fits well on the Mazda bike brackets. Yakima Mighty-Mounts work too, but the Mazda ones are better. You can get them from Mazdastuff.com for less than a dealer. Thule makes a fork-mount carrier that fits our racks, but it takes up alot of space. The Yakima ones are upright carriers.

So what do you do? I'm in biochemistry, working on microarrays and building a mouse genomic DNA library.

Thanks for the input Opus. I thought I heard somewhere that the Yakima rails work. Now it's time to surf Ebay for one! As for the chem, I'm a phys/org chemist doing anlytical surface spectroscopy. Sounds fun, huh? We scientists know how to have a good time! And we know how to pick a great car. Happy 4th!
