I am not expert on Trannys so forgive me, but is there anyway to merge gears 1 - 2?

What do you mean by "merge?" I've taken apart and rebuilt a few auto trans. so I might be able to help.

ooooh i think i know what your talking about, its in first gear with second already engaged to the transmission and semi on the clutch for seamless upshifts? is that it?

So you're trying to make sure that you don't have one of those "smooth shifting" trans? Or are you trying to get a smoother shift? You're second post confused me. I thought you were trying to find a way to be in two gears, but the second post says, to me, that you're looking for a shift kit.

I just went and read all the comments that Steve Knickerbocker wrote, and that's some trippy stuff man. I never got that in depth with the valve body, I just took it apart, replaced things with stock parts and put it back together. Good luck with whatever you're trying to accomplish.

what I am getting at is, away to force the tranny to ignore gear one, is there a possible way of doing this, maybe something programed into the ECU?

I know everything has to do with Load / Throttle / Ratios and other variables, but other then place the car in D2 or 2. is there a way to have the car not use gear one in regular drive?

if it sounds like a odd ass question, thats cause it is...

You could give Jaguar a call I guess. I think they're new auto trans don't shift into first unless you come to a complete stop.

Seriously though, I bet there's a way to do it. You'd most likely have to do something to the valve body (along the lines of blocking passages for fluid) that would force the transmission to go no lower than second gear.

I'm curious though, why don't you want first gear? You only get 4, I like to use all of 'em.

wow ok i'll give my two cents. if you want a harder shift, i was told to pack in the clutch plates, suposeably thats what was done to my friends accord and it cherps 2nd on spray.

Not trying to offend you tim but automatic transmissions don't have clutch plates.

number one reason is fuel consumption reasons, number two reason is that anoying shift you get from 1 to 2, when your fluttering the gas a little, feels more like a thumph instead of a easy shift....

It most likely can be done, but it's not worth the headache. Fuel useage will not decrease that much, if at all. You will accelerate slowly all the time until you get into the proper powerband. You could end up damaging your engine also. If you "lug" the engine, in other words, demand too much power with the tranny in the wrong gear, it is usually more damaging than overreving. Seriously.

If you want to save money (gas) don't pay someone to mess w/ the tranny, just keep feathering the throttle. At least that way, if you need to go fast, you can.

umm dude an auto tranny has clutch packs several plates put together

Yes, I know they have clutch packs but if you pack them, it automatically engages that gear. The plates have very small and specific clearances.
