Arg! I Can't Get My Dad To Get Me A Mazda Protege5!

Alright, this battles been going on for a LOOOONG time.

My dad just can not trust Mazda. He's the type that's always been with Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. He just never heard of anyone that's a happy mazda buyer.

I first went for the Mitsubishi Lancer, and I thank him for stopping me from buying a Mitsubishi.

Secondly, I considered Mazda Protege ES, he didn't like it either.

Third, I said I wanted Protege5, he didn't like the idea of getting a Mazda.

Fourth, I was looking at all Mazda Protege5, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Matrix.

After a LOOOOONG time, I decided Mazda Protege5 and I talked to him yesterday about it, but again, he says he would like to avoid Mazda.

From being here for a very long time, I'm not sure whether Mazda is a reliable car or not. As of now, I know people are having rattling problems and resale value is not as high as Honda or TOyota.

HOW CAN I CONVINCE MY DAD or MYSELF to believe MAZDA is RELIABLE?!?!?!

sunbyrne March-22nd-2002 10:42 AM

Grab the latest Consumer Reports, the 2002 car issue. Turn to page 26, CR's "projected reliability" forecast for the 2002 cars. Note the chart on "small cars" where the Protege comes in ahead of the Sentra and the Civic, and roughly the same as the Toyotas that are rated (Echo and Prius--the Corolla isn't rated because the Corolla is a new early 2003 model now).

As for never heard of a happy Mazda buyer, look around these pages and on Edmunds--there are lots of happy Mazda buyers, especially of Proteges. And while some people are reporting rattling problems, well, a rattle isn't a very big problem, and most of us have *not* experienced it.

Show him some first generation Proteges that have over 200,000miles ..............that should tell you that if you take care of it, it will LAST.........................good luck

Sporin March-22nd-2002 10:50 AM

All it should take is a good look at Consumer Reports. The Protege lineup has been very reliable for many many years. It's built in Japan, of Japanese parts. Civic and Sentra are not.

If it's your money, buy what you want.

If it's your Dad's money, you might be "stuck" getting what he wants. I think if someone was buying me a car, I probably wouldn't bitch too much about it.

You've made your wants known, if he isn't comfortable with the brand, I don't see what you can do to change that.

The man with the cash makes up his own mind what he's gonna spend it on ;)

Are you saying he won't let you spend your money on a Protege? Shame on you, Dad!!

If he's buying you the car, sit back and say "thank you very much" when he picks out something he feels safe for you to drive.

If you persuade him to buy something he's not comfortable getting you, and you kill yourself in it, he'll live the rest of his life knowing you wouldn't even of had that particular model (which he never felt comfortable with) in the first place, if he hadn't given in and bought it for you. Surely you wouldn't want to put him in that position.

I feel ya man. Had to slave my way while in college at the damn BK to get up enough $ cash for my first beater. But I can't say Im not a bit jealous... wish my parents weren't po ass MOFOs.

Deceptipro March-22nd-2002 05:58 PM

Hmm...I wonder if your dad doesn't trust Mazda because of its affiliation with Ford... If it is, then you should point out that so far, all Proteges are Japan made and have little to no Ford designed parts...and definitely no mechanical parts installed or designed by Ford.

GREAT!

My dad offered me a 2002 Toyota Camry which is REALLY decent. My mom drives one and it's very roomy and luxurious. It's GREAT, but I kinda have some looks attraction to Protege5.

Yea, my dad's paying every penny of this car. He doesn't want me to help since my brother and sister got a car.

GREAT! THat Consumer Report will definitly help. He always tells me to look in Consumer Reports to see that Toyota and Honda is very reliable. I can use this to maybe buy a Protege5.

I'll go buy that issue to show him Mazda is good. and if he says no to Protege5... I'll get the Camry or even the new Corolla.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Car

Ok, tell your dad that he doesn't know squat about cars. Let him buy you a nice Buick Century. Then, smash it into a brick wall at 30 mph so that it becomes scrapped...Tell him you smashed it because you felt like the steering wheel was turning on it's own...
Then you'll get a P5.....

Even better, tell him to buy you a nice pick-up!!!!
Honestly, one of the saddest posts yet!!!!

kenji4861 March-22nd-2002 08:16 PM

Re: Car

Aww come on. I really appreciate him even buying me a new car. We just gotta work out something he'll accept and I like. Anyways, I just got the issue of the consumer reports. This is evidence that Mazda Protege is doing good in the last 2 years, but also evidence that Honda and Toyota has been reliable for the last 10 years. We'll see how this turns out.

Camry?? :barf:

Yea it may be a nice, luxurious car, but you are young, you dont want a "mom" car! Tell him that you want a car that shows who you are, and obviously the P5 is for you since you say you have an attraction, like most of US! :p

mnkyboy March-22nd-2002 08:25 PM

Here is some other good resources for the P5,

Edmunds names the Protege 5 the "Small Station Wagon Under $20,000" Most Wanted. Cross off the Station Wagon part, Edmunds fudged on that one, the P5 is a hatchback!!
here is the link to the article...
http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/mostw...tml?id=lin0257

Do some more research, the Protege is on top of many reliable list.

Toyota Camry, official car of middle-aged suburban wives (those who don't drive SUVs).

Flesh Cakes March-22nd-2002 10:12 PM

You are so lucky! I'm shopping for a car, thinking of the Protegé, and I'm gonna be paying every penny! A whole year of work minimum to pay it off :(

But to help you out, I find Mazda VERY reliable. I have a still working '89 323 (which I believe the Protegé was based on) and it still runs. Sure it isn't in top shape (reason why I want a new one) but it still gets from point A to B and I have approx 225 000 km on it. The funny thing is that everybody I ask about Mazda all say it is REAL reliable :)

And know what, I believe them :D

mkdxxx March-23rd-2002 02:40 PM

He's an idea...buy it yourself. Go to college, get a job and buy it yourself. If you Dad is buying it be happy and consider yourself lucky that you are getting a free car!!!

Bruce95fmla March-23rd-2002 07:34 PM

tell him to come surf this board himself and see how much happy 1st 2nd and 3rd gen owners we have here
Bruce

mazda2005 March-24th-2002 01:46 AM

we have a 98 protege and we've never had any problems out of it. all our mazdas have been great cars, and my family has been buying them since the late 80s.

HA! this proves that i'm not the only one who notices that!!! and those are usually the hottie wives :yumyum: sorry sunbyrne, gotta disagree w/the middle-age part. 28ish to 40ish is pretty hot and not too old or middle-aged to me. :p

JustinMP3 March-24th-2002 03:54 AM

You should be so happy to get a car. I worked my ass off for my first car. Needless to say I only could aford a peace o Shit Nissan sentra and it wasnt even an SeR. Now I am happy to be working my ass off to be able to pay my monthy payment on my mp3 But hay best things come to those who wait.
:bt:

Makaveli March-24th-2002 02:32 PM

Come on guys, my dad agreed to split the payments with me, and obviously he had the final say on the choice of the car, but still you'd rather drive a Protege then a pos slow-mo Corolla that he made me test drive. To answer your question, buy the consumer report, and also try and find some people that have old Proteges that are in good shape.

Take him to the dealer, and tell the dealer before hand to talk about safety and reliability of the car. Arrange it, so that he mentions how Mazdas are made completely in Japan, and tell him to give him a few bits n pieces about safety, etc.

Sir Nuke March-24th-2002 03:14 PM

Makaveli had a good point....talk to the sales person that you have been dealing with...if you havn't spoken to one...call up the local dealer and ask for one....then make sure you KNOW his name and when you take your dad in there ensure you talk to the same person....WE ALL know you would be getting an excellent car....not to mention...they are rather inexpensive compared to a lot of others out there on the market. They are a good value. make sure the salesperson talkes up the safety and realibility aspects of Mazda.....and get your dad the reading material (consumer reports) prior to going......

I am a father.....I have two teenage daughters.....bad luck for them I am NOT buying them cars.....they will work for them....however....I will stear them to purchase something that will last them.....and I would certainly encourage them to buy a Mazda that was taken care of.

:D

Sorry, I have to agree with everyone here. I think parents buying their kids new cars is one of the worst things you can do. It teaches the kid jack shit about the value of money and teaches to kid to not respect the car.

Plus you get no respect from other people when you say "my dad bought it for me".

...i would've taken a new car in a heartbeat from my parents. But after paying for my own car 100% by myself and evne buying another car, as well as doing repair, modifications all by myself (100% funded by me too), i'm sorta glad my rents aren't involved in any way...

...i'd murder someone if the hit me in a parking lot and left no note (assuming i watched it all happen ;)).

You couldnt have said it any better! ;) I am 25, and I have owned (3) cars so far. All of them where purchases with MY hard earned money. My first car was a 1985 Toyota Cressida. It was a great first car, and I treated it like a baby until it started to die of old age. My next car was a 1995 Grand Am, which I took very good care of, until it started to play the "POS" game. I couldnt believe how hard it was to maintain that car! Have you ever known a really mean person, and you tried to be nice to them, and they still treat you like shit, well no matter how hard I tried to keep that POS looking and running good, it kept slapping me in the back of my head! LOL. Now I have my wonderful, beautiful P5, and I couldnt be any happier!

Lesson of the day, if you really really really want a Protege, then get a job and pay for it yourself. Maybe you can make a deal with your parents and tell them you would pay for half of it, or they could pay your insurance for it?

kenji4861, can you please post a reply so we know you are still alive??

Fulminatus March-25th-2002 02:04 PM

Jeez guys.. lay off the boy/man. His dad is offering to buy the car. Kenji wasn't begging for it.

If my parents bought me my car, I would've been happy to take it. I wouldn't refuse. But I'm sure I'd still take care of the car just as well cuz that's the way I'm like. It's my nature to take care of my shit.

Kenji, it'd be nice if you got the car you wanted. The camry is a good car. Just get a nice colour =). Be happy with it if its free heh.

craigrrrp March-25th-2002 02:54 PM

my parents never bought me shit...my first car i bought was a plymoth horizon..woohoo...that i got for 600 dollars ..what im trying to get at is i wave no respect for money if you all knew me you would see that i go through money like water.and who gives a poo poo if his mom and dad are buying him a car thats the life he was born into, yea i may not agree with him bitching about what free car he gets but that is none of our buisness to bitch and complain about him getting a car......quit being haters....kenji good luck on the car....but just take what they get you

I agree.

You appreciate your stuff MUCH more when you manage to buy it yourself. I am going to buy a new car before Juen and it is going to be a minimum of a whole year of work to pay it off. But once it will be paid, I'm gonna feel mighty proud of myself. :D
