Alarm/Starter Installation
 

Sup everyone,

I just bought a Viper 791XV 2-Way Alarm and Remote Starter system, and I have some general questions as far as installation goes. The only reason I bought this is because I got a hell of a deal on it, its retail price is $500 but I got it for $150 so I figured I might as well. Anyway, has anyone installed one of these units on our cars yet? I have a '03 Protege5 and I just wanted to see if I would need to buy any extra parts or if I would have to remove anything since our cars already came with remote entry. Any input on this would be very helpful, other than the advice to go to an actual shop and do it because I looked into it and they all want at least $120 for installation...

$120 for an install of this complexity is a good deal! I ahve done it - and believe me - it touches everything in the car!! Unless you are an advanced shadetree-installer like Moi, i wouldn't recommend doing it yourself...

I kinda figured that myself ... but the thing is I really don't have the cash to dish out another $100 for installation especially considering I didn't pay much more for the alarm itself! I looked around the forum to find out some more info on how to do this, and I guess the only thing that still worries me is if our cars have the relays and everything else needed for installation, cuz I'm gonna go ahead and go through with this install myself anyway (I'm too poor to pay someone...). So if anyone happens to have any tips or pointers before I get into this, that would be of great help! Thanks!!!

a dealer quoted me an awesome price ($70) on the OEM alarm for the 2003 Protege. LED status light, starter disable, trunk protection, shock sensor, override switch, trip alert, and trigger identification. from what people say it should be a plug-n-play unit for cars that already have remote keyless. i'd like to do it myself - no other install shop in the area will touch an OEM unit. as far as time and amount of labor, anybody know how difficult is the "plug-n-play" install and how long would it take a n00b to do? my other option is that i get a $330 viper alarm with all the same features for only $160 which includes installation labor w/ employee discount.

IMHO no OEM system is any good - just because the thieves will KNOW EXACTLY what they are dealing with.

A better system is one where they have to 'guess' what it is (Do NOT put the 'protected by Viper' sticker in the window - for this reason! ;) )and hopefully pass you by for an easier car.

the only reason i'd want an alarm is to have the responder keyfob - so that in the event of a break in the keyfob will alert me. unfortunately none of the alarms we carry at my job have that, its just a simple 2-way system that lets you know your alarm is on or off. thats why i went w/ the mazda alarm - it plugs into the existing wiring and i can still keep my keyfob. unfortunately the mazda alarm i bought is hosed or i'm an idiot. everything plugged in correctly but when i insert the fuse to complete the circuit the horn goes off in a sustained continuous blast. no beeps or patterns. wont disarm, the kill switch doesnt work. at least the LED light flashes. im gonna try to swap just the module and keep the wiring in place and try again. if it still doesnt work i'll just buy a retail alarm.

Try this.

Disconnect the horn (save your hearing).
Hook up a volt meter to the hot wire.

NOW plug the system in.

Activate it (open door).

Does the power to the horn STOP?

If so - you need a relay to the horn.

What if it didn't stop the horn?
