99 Protege Dirty Intake Manifold

Hey everyone,I have a 99 Pro 1.6L. I was messing with my car today and I removed the air tube that goes into the throttle body form the air box, and found that inside my throttle body and air intake, it is VERY dirty with a MAJOR oily carbon build up. I was wondering if any of you guys have ever cleaned your throttle body and intake manifold? With having 80,000 miles on it, it has never been cleaned. I have been having some spark knock for several months and I am thinking that is where its coming from. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks alot,
Barry

they sell shit to spray in there to clean it. any auto parts store should have it. just look to make sure it's for your type of engine or whatever. it'll say on the can. spray the shit in the TB, and turn on the car right after it. you'll see some nasty black smoke come out of the exhaust because it's burning off that nasty crap. works good from what i hear. if anyone has had any bad things happen with this though, please speak. :)

dirty TB

that sounds like carbourettor cleaner.
it's just a flammable high power solvent,
worked pretty well on our old Ford, throught the carbie, not sure about TB, but i can't see why it would cause a problem

the can specifically says it's for the TB though. it wasn't just carb cleaner. well, i'm sure it's the same stuff, but claims its for tb's.

I've taken mine apart and mine was as clean as a whistle but then again I only have approx. 26,000 miles on my car. I used throttle body cleaner I got from the local auto supply store. I also used a tooth brush to help me scrub. I tired not to let too much of the cleaner get away because I heard it's not too good for your cats.

Was it very hard to take it apart? I am not sure if I should try it myself.
