48,000 Km inspection...2002 Protege ES GT
 

Well, 48,000 Km rolled around on the odometer and it was time for the big inspection for warranty. This was what it cost and what was discovered. I have owned the car for 2 years.

Price $227.00 Canadian.

Rotated Tires
Fixed small nail hole in one tire.
Replaced Spark Plugs
Inspected Brakes (50% remaining in front and 70% remaining in rear)
Replaced coolant and gear oil
Tightened all chassis bolts and lubricated them
Oil and filter change
And a whole wack of visual checks...

What I requested and they are dealing with next week under warranty...

(1) Cold start knocking sound from engine (The have ordered the Relay that they replace and the VTCS?? plate and they will upgrade my ECU. - they did not hesitate to do this fix, as long as there was record of me complaining about in on their files.

(2) When starting out in first gear, over the months it is becoming more and more difficult to start out without "Juttering" off the start - I have to rev higher. I mentioned this to the mechanic and he said that the factory model comes with a cheaper clutch that sometimes expierences loosness in the springs over time.

He ordered me a brand new upgraded clutch (flywheel and everything) and it is covered under warranty. I was impressed with the service.

YA, just got my clutch done earlier this week, it is sweet... wayyyyy smoother. Also the black rim around my drivers side doors is fading and had lost the shine compared to the pass side. The service manager asked me to bring my car in again yesterday because his rep (don't know if he was the western canada rep or what) was going to be in and wanted him to look at it. So I took it in and met the rep Robert, and he had a look at it. Cam the service manager said they would talk about it and get back to me. Still haven't heard anything, but I am thinking they are going to replace the mouldings.... sweet!!

I can't wait for the new clutch...especially if it is WAY smoother.

I am in a bitter battle over my clutch. They are refusing to replace it because they can't reproduce the chatter. It is something I've been complaing about forever, long before any service bulletins or anything, but since the chatter happens so rarely, they can't reporduce the problem and hence are refusing to replace it. Has anyone else had this problem? I am in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), has anyone in this area had their cluch successfully replaced?

The dealership called me today and the parts are in. They will do all the upgrades on Friday while I am at work.

You should keep complaining about your clutch. It seemed to be a known problem with Mazda factory clutches (at least at my dealership).

Speed look here the tsb is listed there. Print it off and take it in to them. Also it's a warranty procedure not like it's sweat off their balls... MazdaNA picks up the bill...

Zoltan, how often does your "juttering" happen? Was the dealtership able to reproduce the "jutter"?

I was able to convince them, and the parts have been ordered.

doctor_r - this is quite a problem, becasue it's not a recall, and supposedly, Mazda authorizes the fix only if the dealer/mechanic can verify the problem (or at least that's what I was told). Supposedly, the dealership will not get reimbursed under the warranty if the parts they replace are proven not to be defective. Anyway, the link you posted does not work.

My "Juttering" tends to happen more on some days then others and for no particular reason. When it does occur, it is very frequent (at every light) and to compensate I have to rev the engine higher and ride the clutch to prevent it. I don't know if temperature plays a factor....very hot days seemed to be worse for it I beleive, but cannot be certain due to its inconsistency.

I am not sure if the dealership was able to reproduce or not (they never mentioned). They asked me a few questions about it for clarification and ordered the parts right away.

thanks, it all sounds too familiar. I think you're right about the hot weather, it seem to be worse for me as well, unless it's an illusion becasue I spend more time in the car during the summers. I also noticed that it tends to happen more frequently when the car is heavier (more passangers), I guess that would make sense as the clutch is forced to work a little harder.

As for the inconsitancy, I completely agree. That is the main reason why I had such a problem getting the part replaced.

i got the clutch replaced a few months back because of the chatter issue. now i can't shift into reverse after being parked unless i first putit into first, roll forward a bit then attempt reverse a couple times. have an appointment next week that shouldn't be a problem because it happens EVERY time.

The vics rattle is totally annoying. Its gotten so loud people think i have a spun rod bearing... on that note, any of you notice a knocking at certain rpms that was related to it? I have other issues though as the tranny spits out third all the time. Will have to see what it is this time :rolleyes:

Hey all, I finally got the clutch disk, flywheel and clutch cover replaced on my '02 P5 as per the bulletin found in a message by doctor_r above. Wow what a difference, I can't believe the difference. The shifting is so much smoother now, I no longer have to "feather" the clutch during shifting, and the jutters/chatter - well too early to tell yet, but so far so good. Either way, I think the problems, hassles and bull shit I went through to get this done was well worth it. I'm glad it's done.

Really? That's cool. That's only about 4 hours away from where I live (Williston, ND.) I should have gone there to buy my car instead of Fargo. I wonder if a Canadian dealership would be able to do service on a US-spec car.
