2002 Protege / Protege 5 Shop Manuals In!

Just picked up my P5 shop manual today from the dealer. It's $180 Canadian, so it's actually not too steep, considering it's a 5 inch binder, full. That's right, 5 Inches of paper! There is coverage in this manual for every nut and bolt on the 2002 Protege and Protege 5. I was surprised even to find out how to run a self-test built in diagnostic on the stereo! Everything is in this manual, covering the torque settings for each individual bolt on the car. Even if you're not a home-mechanic such as myself, ;) (My Dad even has a 4 post hoist for his 2000 Vette that we use for oilchanges, etc.) It's still great reading to help you really, truly get to know your car. So head down to your dealer, and order one. It's well worth the dough, I assure you. If anyone needs a part number for the manuals, just post here and I'll be sure to include it next time I'm on.

Shop book should have everything there is to know about the car in it. If it doesn't thats a major problem. PLUS, I can't believe that they waited what...6 months....from when the car was sold to the public before they got shop manuals in. Thats a problem, IMHO. We had shop manuals for the 2002 models in July/August/September of last year.

I must have it!!!

Please let me know the part number. I have been waiting for this. I had Olds Alero before the pro and the shop manual sucked!!!

So then...

Which manual should you get to cover the MP3?? The 2001 or the 2002 manual? Hmmm, would I need to get both?

I hope not.

So where can I get a manual?

Forgive my greeness on the subject, but I would love to get a manual for the 2001 LX that I have, the detial sounds great! Where would I order one in the states, and what would be the cost and the wait? Thanks for any insight or help on this!

I'm just wondering though...The MP3 supposedly has advanced timing, which is where most of the extra ten horsepower comes from. Stuff like that would be in the Shop manual, I'm assuming anyway, so where would I get that info.

I wonder if they make an MP3 insert section? I guess I have to go to the dealership and harass the parts guy for awhile.

Mazda P5 engine and ford engine.

I was talking to one of my buddies about the P5 and he was saying that the P5 has a ford engine. Ford engines are crap, do all protege's have em, and what can i do to weed out the P5's with ford engines

I have the 2002 manual. There is nothing about the MP3 in it. Since the MP3 was only sold in the 2001 model year, I would imagine the '01 manual is the one to get.

It would be nice to have a manual around, if for no other reason than it will list all of the torques and tightening patterns for critical fasteners such as those securing the cylinder head. I've looked for alternatives to the factory manual, and no one (not Haynes or Chiltons) has produced it. I inquired as to why not, and they both said that the production volumes of the car were too low for them to justify it. So, yeah, $160 (what I was quoted in the US) is a lot of money, but when it's the only game in town, what else are you going to do?
