2.0 l Our lifters are mechanical
 

This means that it has a spacer to keep the valve from retracting and hitting the engine. I took mine into the shop and will get an answer tomorrow. I know this has been talked about to death but this was news to me. It would be pretty exspensive to correct. Does any one know what the long term damage could be?

HUH? There is a bucket and shim type lifter that the cam actuates. This lifter rides on top of the valve. It has a machined out area that allows you to put spacers in the bucket in order to get the correct valve lash. There is NO WAY one of these could pop out and the worst that would happen if it did is you would have almost no valve opening on that one valve and you might tear up a cam lobe. They thing that keeps your valves from falling into the engine is the spring retainer held onto the valve by a pair of keepers.

The problem is that one or some of the shims are too thin.

I dont quite understand what your saying. Can you elaborate? Are you getting lifter noise? No power?

A chatter, the ever popular noise of mystery that alot of people are hearing during cold starts but goes away when the engine warms.

I beleive what jcilforever is saying/asking, is IF the mysterious "cold start engine rattle" could be improperly shimed valve clearance......which goes away when the car heats up because the clearances close up....we ALL know things grow together as they heat up and expane.

Well I don't have the cold start noise and my valves are shimmed right on at .010. The range is .0089 to .0116 so mine are right on. If they were shimmed loose it would be noiser but it would be a ticking noise rather than a rattle. Even if they are out of spec it would be hard for one of them to come out. They are down in the lifter about 1.75mm so you'd have to have at least that much valve clearance for them to be able to get out. If you had that much clearance, believe me you'd know.

I agree, doesnt sound like lifter noise.

My rattle is defininately not lifter noise unless Mazda is using tin as a lifter!

The dealer noted the noise and gave me a bulliten from Mazda.

ALL 2.0L between 2001-2002 are affected

Customer may experience an engine rattle under light to moderate acceleration with engine coolant temps below 149 deg F and engine rpm's between 1500 to 2500.

Confirm noise only occurs within the VTCS ( Variable Tumble Control System) operation "valve closed" period (when ECT is below 149 deg F)

This noise is currently believed to be the result of the timing between VTCS plates "opening", and the ignition spark advanc command. This is an operating characteristic of this engine and no repair attempts should be made. Although the noise is present only during cold start up and disappears once the engine coolant reaches 149 degrees F, Mazda realizes that it is an annyance to some customers and its engineers are investigating possible countermeasures in an effort to address customer satisfaction.

Sounds like they are trying to get away from a recall and a problem that most likley won't cause damage during warranty!

Anyone who list, as a added Mod to there Protege or anything with wheels, a TORNADO, and is pround of the fact that they rely on a funnal with a staircase inisde it, to give them that extra zoom, should have his house searched for Goerge Formans Lean Grill, and the Juice Man Juicer, and have all these objects burned. You should also be fated to lose your car in a flash flood cause you thought the Duralube you bouaght would protect your engine form flooding. Seriously I'm not normally a harda$$ and an a$$hole but in this case some one has to step in before you start claiming that the blue stripe on the top of your window along with the JDM stickers on the botoom of the door, and last but not least, the tinted windows give your car more HP and add 5000 RPM's, Rice Burnt Per Min, to your powerband.

I never claimed to get a hp increase but performance has increased within my current mods. I have been over this many time and thank you for your interest.

You should know better, and I did go into exagerate a little, but come on how can that thing sitting in the direct path of the air you want help increase air flow, I have huge of its theories before I think its was called turbines, bu those don't fit in Intakes thre big azz engines, a turbine is not an accesorie to an engine it is the engine. Just think about it, if ya know anything about engines and physics, then you will realize it has no positive effects, except mabey to cool the air down a little more when I say little I mean, , ya thats what I mean, but his is why you have a Injen CAI, I have to ask myself another quetion how can you have a INJEN CAI, and have this thing fit, its supposed to go on stock intakes?/???? uhmm

I ordered it with its money back guarantee then tested it in various areas before fitting it in the final destination. If it did not work I would have gotten my money back, really that simple. I placed it on the inside of second portion of the injen intake (which just happens to be 2.5 ", just after the MAS. I also installed an AEM bypass on my injen, but I did that using my own skills. I am only taking one idea and using in a way that it is different form the original intention to develop something that is benifical to me, not going blindly on misplaced trust. I see that you are curious more than anything else. It is possible to invent something that goes against all know facts and make it work, for example, the lightbulb, telephone, computer, etc. these were all thought to be impossible and some crazy, but do they work, yes. just open up your mind, however I do agree that the way they advertise is misleading, but your choices are only as good as how much you inform yourself. I do not race, so conditions while driving my car can not be helped. I added a scoop which leads to the filter for more airflow to the filter. I needed it to protect the engine, rather have an engine than 3 more hp on one that no longer runs due to water ingestion:D
