00 Protege ES Keyless Entry

PROBLEM SOLVED. ORIGINAL OWNER PROVIDED ONE LAST WEEK. THANKS ALL!

Just purchased a 00 Protege ES and the original owner didn't have key fobs for remote unlock. I just assumed it wasn't available until I was shopping ebay for other stuff and found some remotes there. Did they all have it, was it an option and how do I confirm if mine has it? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

well, on my 2001, the keyless receiver is mounted under the rear deck panel. you could look to see if you have one back there. if you do, it would be just a matter of getting the right remote and having it programed to work with your car.

Hey, Thanks for the response. I'll check it out in the morning. Your car looks great. Love the stance and the 01+ looks much better out of the box.

Do you find it a bit curious/unusual that an original owner cannot provide the 2 Mazda RKE fobs? I'd guess that 90+% of owners have their ignition key attached to their fob. They are so indespensable a convenience that I purchased a third one for our 02 LX after vehicle delivery. In SoCal, a dealer will code-match a Mazda RKE fob to the control unit for about $75. If you are still on good terms with the original owner, ask him again. Saves you some $$$. Good luck.

That's an excellent idea, for those with acess to the Workshop Manual. I hope that accelrgreat is successful in his endeavour. At the time (24 Dec 2001), I had ordered but not yet received the service documentation for that vehicle.

I wonder if the procedure is the same as it is for the 01+

... I know the 01+ procedure is the same as the newer Mazdas

Original owner found a fob and mailed it to me. All is right with the world! Thanks again.
