Would this be a better upgrade?

I have the J-spec intake cam (was going to do the exhaust too), but now I am thinking that a replacement of the terrible factory clutch for a Clutchmasters clutch assy, and Fidanza alum. flywheel form R&R racing would be a better performance upgrade. Any opinions?

I am thinking of selling the cam and saving for the clutch/flywheel stuff.

My game-plan is making what I have more efficent. I don't want big ass power out of it (daily driver), but I want it to get all there is out of the combo.

I guess what I am asking is would the clutch and flywheel offer a better performance improvement over the J-Spec cams by themselves? (I would rather wait a while for custom cams if I get the urge).

I am thinking custom becuase I am afraid that the j-spec cams won't give me any improvement at all.

I have both intake and exhaust cams from SR motorsports ($449shipped) and it was EXACTLY 18whp over my last NA dyno run.

The cams feel 100% stock until you get to 4500rpms then they pull cleaner. I'm very happy with mine for the money.

If you want a clutch/flywheel deal I can get you some prices on SPEC stuff. I just closed out a huge $4K GB from them.

A clutch/flywheel won't give you any faster times though unless you're having problms with your stocker.....the flywheel would go nicely with the cams or SC though!

p.s. I'm trying to find a clean 88-93 GT 5spd car for my wife for graduation....know anyone who will give me a good price? I don't need anything fancy. Just stock and clean (or lightly modified.)

I'll look around for the car. Might have a few leads.

BTW, I hate my stock clutch with a passion! Any where I can get the exhaust cam only (I just have the intake for now)? How much shimming with it?

Roddimus Prime Oct 19, 2005 10:44 AM

no shimming...just drop in and go.

srmotorsports has them i believe.

Would you, Matt and Matty recommend the cams? I probably wont have the money anytime soon, as I'm starting to save for a motorcycle, but after that I'd be back to the car....Although the car would still probably get some of the money! I was just wondering what you thought, because 18WHP sounds pretty nice to me!

i like them a lot. however if you're not able to install them yourselves you're looking at more money. I had a friend do mine because he has a lift and it would've taken me all day to get it done sitting on my butt in the dirt. He threw them and the rear motor mount in for $100.

sidenote question-- can you run 87 octane with the jspec cams?

yes... a more aggressive cam shouldnt increase any likely hood of detonation

Roddimus Prime Oct 19, 2005 09:00 PM

i have been...no problems yet

mattsstang87 Oct 20, 2005 08:52 AM

I guess I am going to hold off on the cam swap until I can get the exhaust too.

Roddimus Prime Oct 20, 2005 09:57 AM

with a good intake and a free-flowing header you'll get the best gains.

just fyi. I dyno'd my car B&A and got 18whp and 15lb-ft....BUT in the meantime my haltech died and I was running the stock ecu in limp mode...so my numbers may have been higher.
