what's the HP for the Protege?

I keep reading about our cars being overrated by Mazda and people with 3rd gen. Proteges only dyno in the high 90's. I also know that the normal drivetrain loss for a manual is 15% and 20% for auto tranny. If the Protege only dynos at 97ish whp, that means the flywheel HP is only about 115 HP!!!??? WTF!!! So our cars are 15 HP shy of what Mazda claims? I also read that Mazda did something like this with the Miata, why? To increase sales and ruin their reputation? Did they really thing that people would never find out?
I am sorry I always bring up Honds, but everyone I know has Hondas including my brother. My brother dynoed his 00 GSr and it made 142 whp STOCK! Another person I know dynoed his 96 Integra LS/SE and it made 130 whp after CAI, h, e, pulleys. The LS only makes 140 HP, 10 HP more than our Proteges. I have not seen any Protege make 130 whp with as little mods. Not even Traveler with i,h,e,cams only makes 113 whp.
No, I am not going to buy a Honda! I only use Honda for comparison. I like to compare against the compettiion!

Well dude, I've come to the conclusion that our cars just suck ass for power. And I've accepted that fact. I am not going to sink anymore money into trying to make it faster, its just not worth it. If I wanted powere I woulda went the WRX. BUt alas I saw this yellow p5 wagon and just said ahhh the hell with it. I really don't drive fast anyway, and it was like $7000 cheaper or so.
So basically I have just learned to live with the fact that I own a slow car, and it will never be fast without serious amounts of money that I am not willing to pay.

The Juggalo Wagon will be slow, and loud. And that's fine with me, perhaps most of the other Pro owners out there should come to grips with the fact that our cars are just slow as well.

Traveler August-14th-2002 10:54 PM

B*llsh*t! I will make it fast! I will, I will, I will.... I'm not into it for a whole ton yet. Give it some time. I'm waiting to see what an Emanage will do. The ECU is what sucks on these cars. A better level of tune should make a world of difference.

Sweedenhouse August-14th-2002 11:00 PM

Hey more power to ya man. I've read your posts, and you are far more knowledgeable about cars and shit than I am. So if you can find a way that doesn't require a kajillion dollars for only a 20HP gain, than by all means I'm down for it. I would like to, but I don't have the knowledge base, facilities, or tools. So anything you can figure out, I'm willing to listen.

VagaBond-X August-15th-2002 11:10 PM

well my sig has my values

but those are what mazda estimates for my car

I've never had it dynoed...so ohwell

Also could it be that mazda says 130hp at crank....and we dyno high 90s at wheel...so that could make up for some difference....

I just want to get my car dynoed someday...hehe

I agree with ya! I love my vy p5, and i find its fast enough for what i do. Some people like to street race, and if thats the case, you should be driving a honda...

Sweedenhouse August-16th-2002 12:45 AM

Yeah, I mean if you wanna go fast, people shoulda done more research before getting these cars. I mean I do love the Juggalo Wagon, and I take care of it. I keep it clean, I put a big ass stereo in it, did wheels, tint, lowered suspension and all that. I initally thought perhaps I could make it fast, but all I've bought is an Injen cai, and a Bosal catback. And I think that's all I'm gonna buy, with as much as I've learned about our engines. I mean for a daily driver its perfectly fine. PLenty of power to merge onto a freeway, or make a pass on a hill. I have no desire to go race people, or rev my engine at stop lights like a jack ass. My car to me just looks good, and sounds good (stereo wise). And that's all I really need to make me happy. Screw making a race car outta protege, its just an exercise in futility.

Oh and mnkyboy, I didn't know you were a TOOL fan. That's cool.

i've been in the honda crowd for over 10 years...honda often understates hp (called healthy ponies) in order to avoid a hp reporting problems like ford had with the earlier cobras, mazda with its new miata, or nissan with its new sentra ser spec v. My old gsr completely stock dyno'd at 150whp which means it makes more like 180hp at the crank (10 more than advertised). Ricers aside, you have to remember that honda is an engine company ruled by fanatic engineers obsessed with racing.

even more impressive gains i've seen are stock d16y6 (92-95 civic ex engines) with i/h/e and in proper tune can make around 140whp.

You I think alike :bt: The only thing that I might do to the car performance wise is add a turbo if it becomes available, but I most likely will not.

Yea, Im a Tool fan. Saw them in concert about 3.5 years ago. Cool band, love their music style. One of a kind band for their sound. I dont agree with some of their views (religious stuff), but that doesnt stop me from listening to them. Their videos some of the best ever made (imo).

nightowl August-17th-2002 02:05 PM

well i really want that turbo...but i see these racing headers...so i'm prob going to wait till next year and see what is out there and whats the best

Way to be, dude. To each his own opinion, and I'm glad you shared it.

Mr. 1.6 August-27th-2002 03:08 PM

I dont think that Mazda ever really cared too much about their cars winning stoplight races. That has always seemed to be a north American thing to me. Mazdas have always been very well balanced cars. Very easy to get them to do exactly what you want them to do in the corners.

However due to the lack of straight line speed they are very underrated in terms of the sportyness you get for the dollar.

I cant say that i dont wish I could beat my Cavalier driving friends off the lights (and on the highway for that matter). But my little 1.6 really impressed me when I got the chance to see what it could do on the Shannonville road circuit. I found that the engine was tuned to take advantage of the gearbox in a way that totally suited road racing.

I like to look at the low power of Mazdas as what separates them from the cars that appeal to pedal stompin boy racers.

Keith@FM August-28th-2002 03:48 PM

First, you can't declare all transmissions to be equal in terms of power transmission. It's usually a fixed amount (not a percentage) and it varies from design to design. Stop obsessing on claimed HP, and concentrate on actual wheel HP. That's what matters anyhow.

We've got dyno runs of a couple of stock Protegés on our site. The FS series is obviously tuned for torque and not power. They do seem to be a little tight when new, but we'll have a better idea when we have more dyno runs on them.

I'll have to agree, It's not all HP unless you enjoy boring traffic light racing. When it comes to real racing it's the package that counts. Has anyone watched any of the SPEED Touring car racing that is on Speedvision or SpeedTV? If not you should. Mazda Protege's are up against BMW 325's, Acura Integra's R, Lexus iS 300, honda Civics etc. Well guess what car won at the last race in Mosport just 2 hours away from where i live? that's right a Mazda Protege, and it's not there first win. These cars are mostly stock except for some changes like exaust, intake, suspension but that goes for all the cars so it's relative. Take the BMW 325 for example, 185HP stock, well it came in 2nd place to the protege and another protege finished 4th. here is an exerpt:

"Bonaccorsi started second in his No. 40 TriPoint Motorsports/Mazdaspeed Protégé and followed Turner's No. 92 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW 325i for the first five laps. Coming out of tight Turn Five on the sixth lap, Bonaccorsi got a run, and was able to power past the BMW on the long uphill back straight."

And it was to the finish from there. Mazda has a good package going, so what if they have less HP then the competition, I don't enjoy driving fast in a straight line, I'd prefer to take it in the corners!!
