Urgent help required
 

Hi all,

The dealership is trying to install my cams this morning. they took the pieces out of the packaging and thought that they were both Intake cams. They now can't tell which one is which :mad:

Is there anyway to tell which cam is the intake and which is the exhaust. Markings on the cam or anything like that?

standard cams or modded cams?

These are the J-Spec Cams as on Corksport's website. The service guy is saying he can't tell the difference bewteen the two and so doesn't know how to install them.

He's wondering how you tell one from the other. is there a marking on the cams to tell which one is which?

One has an E on it, the other has an I. Each for intake and exhaust respectively.

(That's what I remember being said at least...)

This isn't constructive at all, but I'd tear a strip out of those idiots. How many intake cams did he think you had?
It's like changing spark plug wires - one at a time, so you know where they go!
Sounds to me like some apprentice got the job.

I think Maxx is correct though. If they can't read either, make sure they give you a nice Mazda 6 to drive around in 'till they get it sorted out.

I don't know how all this affects your warranty (I assume it's intact if the dealer is doing the work), but if not make sure they do give you some kind of guarantee on their work. The last thing you want is for them to F**ck it up, and then blame the aftermarket cams.

Ok I have the cams in, though I had to leave work to make sure it got done right.

Here's the low down:

The intake and exhaust cams are the cams from the J-Spec MP3. The intake cam is fine and marked with a I to indicate intake. The exhaust cam is where the problems start.

The exhaust cam is made by taking a blank intake cam and grinding it to exhaust cam specs. As a result the exhaust cam is also marked with an I, hence the problems at the dealership.

I called Brian at Mazda Motorsports and he said without the proper part numbers it is virtually impossible to tell the difference. You would need to measure the lobes to figure out the difference.


After running down to the dealership and explaining the issue we managed to get them installed with no further problems. They were really nice about the foul up and gave me a great deal on the labor.

So I'm now less stressed and panicked then before.

Thanks everyone for their help. If anyone is thinking about installing the cams please remeber this tip and don't mess up the part numbers.

I think Brian also said that they will no longer be avaiable due to the fact that the parts have been discontinued. Not sure if this is true or not but if you want the cams I would suggest trying to get them ASAP.

J-Spec MP3?

The "J-Spec" cams to my knowledge consisted of the FS-ZE intake cam, and the Mazdaspeed exhaust cam.

so how does the car feel after installing the cams?

Yes, please do tell. :) I bought the JDM intake cam used from a fellow board member (chdesign.)

What I really want, is to hear from someone who's done this on an automatic car (would be helpfull if they had RB catback, Injen intake, and AWR header as well.)

Please post thoughts / impressions when you get a chance.
