Types of Synthetic Oil???

When I damaged my car I took it into the dealer for an estimate. He didn't do free estimates, so I had them give me an oil change (about 1500 miles - first change). He was nice enough to agree to let me look around under the car while the guy had it up on the lift.

I wanted to put synthetic in my car for about 2 million different reasons it seems, but the dealer didn't have the Mobile 1 that everyone talks about. So I had them put the Castrol synthetic in the car instead. Has anyone had any experience, heard anything about the Castrol synthetic.

My car seems to run a bit smoother than it did before the change, and I seem to be getting an extra mile or so per gallon on it. I didn't expect to get this kind of results out of an oil change (especially when the car is so new) so I was quite suprised. Or do you think this might be a function of the car continuing to break itself in?

I have used Castrol Syntec in my 99 Protege since it was new. It now has 71,000 miles on it and I have never had a problem. It does not burn one drop of oil and the motor is VERY clean on the inside. I took the valve cover off to paint it and the valves had no deposits or build up on them at all. I would recommend Castrol Syntec to any protege owner.

Thanks Barry

I use synthetic oil too, Castrol Syntec to be exact. They also didn't Mobil 1 available at the price I wanted it. Minor differences amongst them . Note that the best synthetic you can buy for the price is Mobil 1. Amsoil is a little better, but the difference is neglible for a much higher price. Beware of Red Line Engine Oil though. Despite their hype and high price, and their simple packaging, maybe a marketing scheme? Their oil is one of the wrost synthetic on the market.

Oils????

I don't know much about the other companys, but Porshce, BMW, and Jaguar all use Mobile 1 as their OE oil. That is reason enough for me to use it. It does seem a few cents cheaper at Auto stores ($4.49/qt compared to Castrol Syntec's $4.89/qt). Not to mention Team Penske uses it in all their cars.

Exactly. Many oil tests in labs have indicated that there is a lot of lead and zinc content in Red Line Engine Oil. I'll see if I can find the site.
Here it is. See for yuorself before criticizing the validity of my claims.

Not to get in your face or anything, but, "Editor's Note: This information appears to have been posted in a public message to rec.motorcycles. I have not been able to verify the accuracy or source for this file. " does not go a long way towards validating anything...;)

Agip

I use Agip Synthetic, it's a bit expensive (15$L/CND) but it's well worth it and the car loves it, and you can also run it for 12000km-15000km, it's really good stuff, I recomend it totally.

Modile 1 all the way, usually for 3000 miles, but im thinking about extending that to 5000. I really dont know what to do and we can all debate for years on how long to go before changing oil. i dont race or anything (except on the freeway sometimes, heh). but i dunno

I read on several other forums that BMW's OEM synthetic was Castrol Syntec.

hmm... Joel Confer BMW in State College PA, Where i take the M3 says that Mobil 1 and some custom oil filter jobby is what all BMW's use (also that car will go 15,000 miles before a change. its cool the computer tells you when to change the oil and it will shorten the time before changing depending on how hard you dirve. I had to change it in about 6,000 haha). He may be yanking me around, he is a car sales men. but I know Porsche uses it. My dad had a brand new 911 back in 83 and Porsche gave him 5qts of Mobil 1 and a filter so he could either do it himself or be positive that a shop used good oil.

NOT saying anything BAD about Mobil 1....but....

what's the REAL REASON that some of the auto manufacturers put it in their car? i DOUBT its because the synthetics will make the engine last 1,000,000,000,00000 miles...why would they necessarily want the engine to last that long?? it'd be better for them if the engine died sooner...

could it be because they are 'paid' to do so by Mobil 1???

Installshield Apr 6, 2002 03:14 PM

Most likely...
however where did they get the money to do so?

I think that if they have the money to pay manufacturers to use their product, then they were selling a lot to begin with. Mobil is one of the largest oil companys in the world and they sell tons of oil all over. I have no idea what oil is the best and they are most likely so similar that we will never know the difference in our proteges. I use Mobil 1 simpily because they have sold a lot, they make a lot, and it is very easy to find. I have never heard anything bad about Mobil1 and it available at every major parts store. Ammsoil and Redline you pretty much have to order in my area and are either that much better?

Just buy what ever oil you want, its your car. I think the real question is Synthetic Vs. Conventional? If anyone has a third gen. with 150,000 miles than they could tell us what to use.

I agree...for the record i've used Mobil 1, Pennzoil Performax, dyno, even Slick50 :) ...so far, no evidence that this combo has done any harm.
And of course i have no evidence for my Mobil 1 thought; it just wouldn't surprise me!
