TSB on Clutch chatter not found by dealer
 
I took in my 02 P5 for the clutch chatter issue and the service manager said there are no TSBs for it. I gave him a copy of the TSB on this site and he said that would check his service bulletin system and check with a Mazda technical rep to make sure. He called me today and said he had not found any TSB's on my VIN number. What's up with this? Has anybody else with a P5 been told that there are no service bulletins on the clutch chatter?

I'm taking it on monday to try and reproduce the chatter, but even if it happens they will probably treat it as a bad clutch (which is out of warranty) and not address the flywheel issue.

The MAN, you posted the TSB's right? Do they apply to the full range of P5s or only certain VIN numbers?

Any help is appreciated.

For the folks who have had repairs done, have the dealers confirmed/acknowledged the TSB with you?

TheMAN, are some P5's not covered under this TSB?

What are some of the signs of clutch chatter?I probably don't have it, since I don't know what it is.

Is it evident during slipping the clutch, when the car is in neutral? Enlighten me. :D

If you have it you will most likely notice it when your are releasing the clutch starting out in first gear. It only happens when the transmission is cold. If you are jamming on it you probably won't have any problems. When I applied the throttle lightly was when I had problems. It feels like the most unnatural slipping of the clutch. It doesn't bog down and die like the car would if you weren't giving it enough gas, it just skips across the flywheel.

When I took it in the Service Manager called MNAO, then got mad at them and gave them some choice words because it wasn't on his computer...

I had my clutch and flywheel replaced at 13K miles, under warranty, for bad chatter. The flywheel had stress points in it, due to heat they said. The dealership said at the point there was no official TSB but they would replace it. They didn't even drive the car as it would only happen when teh car was cold. When it flywheel warmed up, the spots would even out and engaugement was smooth. They all now call me AJ at the dealership because they said it handled like a racecar with the suspension, wheels and tires. The mechanic also noted (to me) that the intake sounded awesome.

Tomorrow I have an appointment to verify the prob. The car is already at the dealer so we can drive it cold. Hopefully, I can reproduce the prob and have the service manager do an extra careful check for the TSB. And hopefully he'll find it.

I had my clutch and flywheel replaced by a dealer a couple weeks ago, all covered under warranty. All I did was telling them about the clutch chatter and printed out the clutch chatter TSB section (with the #) for them. After confirming the chatter in their test drive, they went ahead and did the fix. I drove an MP3 though. But the TSB should apply to all Pros.

Well guys...I'm speechless. After the service manager checked and did not find any TSB's on clutch chatter for my P5, I decided to call the dealer who sold me my car. That dealer no longer sells Mazda, but does maintain ties with them.

Specifically, I spoke with the General Manager, who also personally sold me the car. He was real helpful and said he would have his service manager check for any TSB's, just to be sure. Well...they also tell me they found no "chatter" TSB's for my car.

Unbelievable! Here I have a good amount of folks saying they have had flywheels replaced under this TSB, and none of my dealers can find any trace of it. Geez, its not like people make this stuff up for fun.

Sorry for venting guys, but if anyone can give me any ideas where to go from here, throw them at me. Right now, I plan on calling or writing to Mazda to report my problem. Hopefully, if this thing completely craps out on me, it will be in the next 25k of my warranty miles left.

TheMAN, would it be ok to cite the TSB's in the FAQ section in a letter to Mazda? Just checking to make sure it wouldnt be a prob to them with the copywrite or anything. Let me know.

Why don't you just call MNAO and tell them what the problem is. They will contact the dealership for you, intervene, and make sure everything turns out okay.

Yeah, calling might be a bit quicker. Hopefully I get somebody that is helpful to me and doesn't try to write me off.

They won't. They will call the dealership for you though. And they have people on staff to tell the dealership what to fix and where to find the TSB. It does exist. My dealership found it.

Some vehicles may exhibit a clutch chatter or judder when releasing clutch during cold conditions. This may be caused by the flwheel and clutch cover surface materials creating a chatter or judder during clutch engagement. The flywheel and clutch cover has been revised to correct this concern. 1. I really hope they wouldn't pretend it doesn't exist just because I used different terminology (TSB vs Mazda repair Info Tip) when asking about it. That would make them real asses, or complete idiots. I assume they weren't either of the two.


So you're a certified Mazda tech? Have you gotten any info on how the revised parts are different. Any info on what causes the actual chatter? Just curious...
