Transmission won't change gears?!?!

Ever since i've gotten my protege5(about a month ago), it has had a problem changing from i think 2nd to 3rd, or maybe 3rd to 4th. It will go to change it and myfoot will be on the pedal, and it will like go into neutral and almost redline.
Tonight i was driving and it wouldn't change at all! Not once, i turned it off and tried again 30 minutes later, same thing! I guess i just have to take it to the shop but man this sucks. Anyone else heard of or had this problem?

Have you checked the auto trans fluid level and condition? I would check for a low fluid level, and possibly a burnt smell. It is possible that you could have slipping bands inside of the trans, or a clutch pack that won't stay engaged. Auto transmissions are for the most part very durable and should last well beyond the life of the vehicle. Everything is done with fluid pressure inside - it is possible that slipping clutch packs or bands could be caused by low fluid pressure in the trans. This could be caused by debris in a check valve or accumulator. It could also be caused by something as simple as very low trans fluid. Since your car seems to only have this condition between two distinct gears, I don't think it is your torque converter.

It was at night when it happened, I'm about to go check the fluid levels

Man, my car is running fine now... (mind boggled)

I'm assuming you know how to properly check your tranny fluid....but I'll post some instructions just in case.

with the car at operating temperature and on LEVEL ground:

put the car in park and remove the dipstick....wipe it clean and re-insert it. Pull it back out and notice the level. Also notice the color as it should be a bright rosey pink...not dull anything...Once you know these things are correct you should try to "burp" any air out of the system that may have gotten in either through a tranny service or leak of some kind.

While standing on the brake shift the car from P-D wait for the car to engage each gear. D-R, R-N, N-D, D-P, P-R, R-P, P-D,.....etc...you get the idea. Make sure every shift you allow the car to actually engage in gear. After this is done re-check the fluid level and add as needed. Drive the car for several minutes and verify that it shifts properly and once you get it back home re-check the level again...

theres this great book that Mazda gives you, called an "Owner manual", now say that with me, P0wn3rs manua!!!...it should be in your glove box. remove book from glove box, blow off dust, open to table of contents. Find section refering to transmission and look for diagram of engine bay and where to find dip stick....open hood, insert prop rod, find dip stick check fluid (refer to Roddimus Primes post above), add if needed..smoke a bowl...

damnit, just saw you didn't get a manual....argh there goes my sarcasm...

p0wn August-31st-2004 02:16 PM

yea now say it with me... my car didnt come with one... wow don't you think i would check there?? hmmm yea... good boy.

p0wn August-31st-2004 02:17 PM

man i took the car to the shop

Matty Mooling August-31st-2004 02:31 PM

you should've done that in the first place

vielster August-31st-2004 03:42 PM

Yeah...and call your dealership and tell them you want a damn manual....if they won't give you one, call Mazda and demand one...there's some cool stuff in there...
