Tranny issues

I have an issue with my tranny. When I am driving along in 5th gear it sometimes just comes out of gear on its own. This only happens on 5th, anyone have any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Roddimus Prime March-28th-2005 11:04 AM

i've never experienced that. dont know what to tell you.

nando2323 March-28th-2005 11:10 AM

yeah its weird it only does it on 5th gear, at low RPM's 2-3K. A friend of mine said that it could be the syncros going bad or something. I really need to know because I have almost 60k on the car and I have a powertrain warranty till 65k.

nando2323 March-28th-2005 11:12 AM

by the way it does not do it very often maybe 1-2 times every two weeks and I drive on the highway everyday. And as for maintenace I take very good care of my car changed the fluid at 40k with mobil one synthetic 75-90. Will change again if thats the case.

How much wear on the clutch? It is a symptom...

nando2323 March-29th-2005 02:20 PM

I dont think there is much at all I only had the car since 35k miles I have only put almost 25k since then. I have driven a clutch my whole 10 years of driving and I have never had a clutch go this fast.

Could something be obstructing your shifter? A synchro shouldn't cause it to pop out. Could be a shifter fork, but I don't know if there are any position adjustments for it (everything's hidden inside of these dang newfangled gearboxes!). Do you tend to drive for miles and miles with your hand resting on the shifter? That will wear down a fork.

This is the second thread lately where a problem developed after changing to synthetic oil.

It ain't going to be a worn clutch.

The only other thing is the spring loaded retainers that keep the shift collar coupled to the mainshaft, but that would be a manufacturing defect and probably not likely. That slickass synthetic oil might cause that locking key to not grab the collar with enough friction to hold it. In 5th gear, without much torque driving it (which would help hold it in place), after a while it may just slip off into neutral.

Get a bungee cord HaHa. Or go back to dyno-juice.

So what do you say I should do to fix this? Get off synthetic but I already driven more then 20k on the synthetic and just now this is happening. I do tend to drive with my hand on the knob for long drives though.

I would take it to the dealer if I were you. I dont believe it could be the synthetic you are using. Sounds like the shift fork to me.

I agree, and do try to break the habit of resting your hand on the shifter. I do it sometimes too by accident, but usually not for too long.

Let us know what the dealer says.

nando2323 April-1st-2005 01:40 PM

yeah im gonna do that as soon as I get some time. will keep you guys posted too.

Yesterday my transmission started popping out of fifth, then about 20 minutes later it bound up and is done for. I'd like to know how your situation turned out because I'm going to call the dealer on monday to check on warranty service. My concern is that they will see my short shifter and decide that it isn't under warranty anymore.

nando2323 April-30th-2005 02:02 PM

mine stop doing it a while ago. Have not done it in like a month I think its because it was super cold when it was doing it.
