so why the POS Corolla dynos 120 whp and 118 wtq and the Protege only 100 whp? What is wrong??? STOCK vs. STOCK OF COURSE

you are comparing APPLES AND ORANGES....

its NOT the same engine....just because its in the ballpark in the SIZE catagory.....its still NOT the same engine. just like take a honda engine of about the same size and you will see that although it makes more HP...it doesnt' come close in the TORQUE catagory.....

the question you ask WHY....is not an easy one to answer and very techinical to point out every single difference between the two engines and account for the differening dyno numbers.

Yeah, but there must be some way to account for our cars losing 3 times as much power between the crank and the wheel than the corolla, at least in generalities.

It's because the Toyota engine is underrated probably.

very good chance.....seeing as how car companies just LOVE to do this to end up getting some sort of tax break or import duty break or crap like that.....

put both engines on an ENGINE dyno and see what each engine produces for REAL at the crank....then put the cars with those engines in a chassis dyno and see what is at the wheels.....

I bet you will find that the loss by % is not that much different.

Honestly, the biggest problem w/ these protege 2.0L is the ECU! The stock ECU in these things are very restrictive, and it disgusts me...when I finish doing some more stuff to the RX7, I'm going to put a standalone EMS in the pro and see what happens...

so the Protege is underrated? I don't see how a car rated at 130 HP only makes 100 whp.

You bought it becuase even with the over rated 130hp engine, it's still quicker and handles better then anything else out there, as well as having more features and just as good of reliability as Honda and Toyota's. (at least that's why I bought two of the damned things:D ) Anyway just charge your car up a fast on ramp or find a good curvy road to take all your hp woes away.

boy is that the truth!! thare are MANY, VERY MANY cars with more straight line power than the Pro that couldn't hang with us in the twisties even if they wanted to....its our cars forte'......unfortunately not all of us live where we can drive roads like that....I being one of those people....and if you aren't either....I feel for you. I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to parts of the country that seem to have been made for our cars to drive through...and I had a total blast.

The Pro may not be a rubber burning racer...but it has more than enough "PEP" to get you in more trouble than you want.

Without twisties there is always a good on ramp or little twisty local back road. You might not be able to go as fast as some of the wonderful mountain roads out west but still can put a smile on your face.

One of my biggest joys is watching other cars disappear in the mirror around on-ramps...even if they do catch back up later.

Ignore the interstate, and go find the FUN road that runs alongside it...that's what I do.
