Team Moon Exhaust

I was just wondering if anyone has a team moon exhaust, and if they like it or not. I am in the market for exhaust and just haven't heard anything about TM. Any info or suggestions is appreciated:D

Sort of shady dyno pull. I thought aftermarket exhaust would sacrifice a little low end power for more mid range and upper range power or something. I may be wrong though That one seems to give exactly 4hp or so the whole pull

check SCC

In a recent issue of Sport Compact Car, they tested a bunch of exhaust systems for their Toyota project car, and they liked Team Moon's exhaust best.

This article doesn't seem to be on the Web site yet.

Both the Toyota and the Mazda exhaust systems are built around a Magnaflow muffler.

I am planning to order one soon.

LOOK....The graph starts at 4000 RPM

LOOK....The graph starts at 4000 RPM

So we don't know what happens below 4000 ?

What is that dip at 4700 RPM.

dewey let me know how it is when or if you get one

Thanks

I just talked to Charlie yesterday and ordered my exhaust from Team Moon. He said that they need to "build the jig", which I take to mean setting up the mandrel machine to bend the pipes. The absence of a jig makes me wonder if maybe I'm the first P5 order he has had.

At any rate, Charlie was very friendly. He said the part will ship out next week (week of 7/29/02), and he doesn't charge until the parts ship.

I probably won't get a chance to install it until next Saturday (8/3/02), but I'll update this thread with more info as it becomes available.

Sound

If the sound that plays when you open the Protege5 page is the true sound of the exhuast, it sounds sweet. I might have to see about this one. When you get yours let us know all about it. Fit/Finish/Sound/etc. $330/plus shipping sounds like a good price for a true catback. And take some better pics of the exhaust before/during you install it please as the ones on the site are not that good.

i have the exhaust. i also live like 10 minutes from the shop so it kinda makes sense. i'm broke as a joke right now and can't give dyno numbers. their dyno sheet on the site is from an automatic i have a 5 speed and i need ot get the 50 bones to get my dyno pull in so charlie wont kill my ass. this exhaust is nice and low and sounds more like a supra than anything else. i have noticed a great deal in power increase through out the power band. its a full cat-back system and i would highley recommend getting this exhaust cause it basically out performs all the others. especially that bumble bee exhaust from mazda speed. charlie is a cool guy and very good to deal with and really knows his shit. i believe vince that works there is a member of this board but never really says anyhting

jubjub75 July-26th-2002 08:40 AM

Lupus--Could you post some pics of your car with the exhaust on? The ones on the site are kinda weak. Thanks!

hehehe, that's the first time i heard someone describing the mazdaspeed muffler as buzzing bee. Must be all that infamous 70mph resonance got us an unhappy customer :D

but back on topic, the sound clip on the Protege5 page does sound like the 2.0L Protege engine, so I think it's legit. It's a very nice sound, probably no resonance either! :(

and a much nicer looking exhaust tip than the bosal!

for comparison sake, here's a clip of the MS muffler on my 2000 ES with the 1.8L engine:

Sound, what sound, I didn't hear anything

ZoomZoomH July-26th-2002 10:40 AM

huh? are you talking about the team moon P5 page, or my link?

AONEZERO July-26th-2002 10:43 AM

Team moon, forget it I heard it.

mzf July-31st-2002 11:42 AM

Ok, so the exhaust looks and sounds great, but how's the construction? I'm in Winnipeg so I'm concerned about rust through the winter. Are the welds clean? Is the muffler stainless and the piping aluminized or is the whole thing stainless?

Any more word on the dyno for the 5speed?

mp3wannabe July-31st-2002 02:27 PM

Just a note for fellow 3rd gen sedan owners, I talked to Charlie at Team Moon today, and he says they are working on an application for the sedan. he doesnt have a date yet, but he said he will keep me posted, and i will keep you all posted if I hear before you.

lupus July-31st-2002 11:14 PM

i have yet to dyno yet i just got my job at ford so i am finally making some real money so i shuold be oging to the dyno soon. the exhaust is built very well. its was built at grand muffler and is all mandrel bent. i know the muffler and tip are stainless and i do believe the piping is aluminized but i'm not sure oln it. i have the guinea pig versoin right now and not the final version yet.

jubjub75 August-8th-2002 10:48 AM

Does anyone have pics yet (other than the team moon website)??

trickedoutP5 August-10th-2002 11:42 PM

How big is that tip? It sounds awsome but that tip just seems a tad big, and I don't really like how it sticks out from the cars bumper, I like them flush with the rear bumper

trickedoutP5 August-11th-2002 11:41 AM

Does anyone know the diameter of the piping, would it be good for turbo?

Aaron August-11th-2002 01:07 PM

and what about loud annoying resonance inside the cabin at highway speeds? anyone?

trickedoutP5 August-11th-2002 02:04 PM

I heard that the resonance isn't bad

jubjub75 August-23rd-2002 04:09 PM

Does anyone have pictures of this installed on their P5 yet? How about sound at highway speeds? Anything?

Grand Muffler Huh? Hmmmm......they've built an exhaust or two for me in the past. They do pretty good work, although I haven't been there in a LONG time. They are off of South Cobb Dr. in Smyrna, GA (those of you living in Atlanta). Be prepared-they do allot of redneck NASCRAP-like stuff. But they do do very good work from what I've seen/bought.

They also sell stainless steel piping so theres no excuse for Team Moon of whatever theyre called to not include it. Although, Im betting that w/ that price its aluminised. A few years back, this was what they quoted me: A mandrel bent system for Sentra SE-R (1992) w/out a resonator and a muffler was around the $125 mark. Now, add stainless and you'd double the price for sure. They will however allow you to bring in your own pipe and muffler to use though (or they used to).

Now, what I want to see is someone be able to wel Titanium! Try doing that in a vaccuum! Its costs but its wont rust and its almost lighter than aluminium and waaay stronger too. In my wet dreams huh?:D Personally, I like the WRC look-unfinished exhaust tip.

dewey September-3rd-2002 07:49 AM

installed mine!

I finally received my Team Moon exhaust late last week, and I installed it over the weekend. It was a very easy install. A couple of minor glitches, but overall I'm very pleased.

Here are some answers to questions in this thread:

it is pretty quiet inside the cabin. Indeed, if you're driving gently, it doesn't sound any louder than stock. If you're driving hard, it is loud, but not unreasonable, especially if the windows are up.

yeah, that's a pretty big muffler tip. It seems to have the same radius as the cutout in the rear bumper, and it sits right up there in it. I'm waiting for it to heat up and melt my plastic, but so far, only the wax has melted.

installation was very easy: replace four bolts. My old ones were a little rusty, so that was tricky, but not too bad. Getting the muffler hangers into the mounting holes was a bit of a challenge, but that, too was doable.

Here is a lousy picture. I'll try to get a better one sometime.

I like the exhaust except for that tip....it's freakin' huge!

jftizw September-12th-2002 06:29 PM

ok, so the one on their website shows the tip of the exhaust hanging out over ther bumper about 3 inches. the one on your car is even with the back bumer. is it because the exhaust on your car is actually made for you car, and the one on their site was for a p5 but stuck on a sedan. also how much would shipping be on something like that. im sure its in a huge box, cause it appeared to be a solid piece on the website. id like to get the bosal, but im giving bosal and mitch till i get my credit card payed off either the first of next month, or the end of next month before i buy either this one, or the racing beat one. i would like to see what the thermal one looks like, but im not sure i want to pay the price for it.

dewey September-13th-2002 07:45 AM

answers to questions

I recently received a Team Moon exhaust. The box *is* huge, but I don't know how much shipping was. It was included in the overall price.

The system comes in two pieces, just like the stock exhaust. The first piece goes from the cat to almost the rear suspension. Then, there's a separate piece that snakes up over the rear suspension and back down the other side. The muffler is welded on here.

I don't know why my tip doesn't stick out like the one on their Web site. However, my tip touches my bodywork, and on their Web site, there's a bit of clear space. That would be good to have, because I'm experiencing some meltage when the tip heats up.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "thermal" exhaust. Is that a brand? But if you just mean that it has thermal (i.e., heat-retaining) properties, then you can make any exhaust thermal by wrapping it with insulated tape from DEI. It's $36 for a roll big enough to do the Team Moon exhaust.
