The Smell is Awful

The odour that my car emits is awful. Whenever I really punch her she starts to smell like rotten eggs. This has been going on for some time now. Also my exhaust tip is always black? Why? Could it be that i'm running to rich?

soma December-17th-2002 10:10 AM

I've heard that the rotten egg smell is actually mazda's rust inhibitor(or something like that) and that the smell will go away over time.....

Really? Hmmm for some reason I highly doubt that.....is anyone else experiencing this problem. For the longest time I thought it might have had some thing to do with the gas. So I changed over to Sunoco gas. I ran 94oct and it did the same thing. I don't understand? I was once told that it has to do with the sulpher content in the gas itself.
Also does anyone else get a build up of black stuff on their exhaust tips?

Ambient December-17th-2002 03:25 PM

Its the packing in the muffler loosing, it will go away.

IMPACT December-17th-2002 03:49 PM

So your telling me its gonna take 2yrs for the "packing" to burn away? This i find very hard to believe....so if anyone has any intellegent answers .......TIA

According to your signature, you have a Mazdaspeed exhaust. That hasn't been around for 2 years. When did you install that?

You are always going to get some carbon build-up on your exhaust tip. It should be just a coating and primarily on the inside on the tip. You should not find any residue you can actually remove without scraping.

What octane gas are you using? Do you use 94 octane all the time? That octane rating is much higher than what the engine is tuned for and has the potential to cause incomplete combustion and carbon build-up.

Other than that, I have only experienced that smell from new engines, new engine parts, or from coolant boiling (usually from a leaking/torn hose or radiator cap).

My mistake.........i haven't had the muffler for 2yrs. Its just that since i've put these mods on, the car really stinks...........The odour is coming from the front of the car......if i put the blower on the face selection i can really smell it............

PuPPet December-17th-2002 08:19 PM

you know... my mp5 did that too (i miss her badly) i couldnt do 75 on the freeway without it reeking of rotten eggs

IMPACT December-17th-2002 08:59 PM

So i'm not the only one.......hmmm..........this is just gonna suck..........so i guess i have to live with the stink......

You know what, asking for damned advice on a public board, getting a response then putting ME down because you didn't like the answer I gave you is downright ignorant, you're just like the guy on the other thread that didn't like his HP estimate that he ASKED FOR, how about you grow up.

Intelligence...the fact you can't figure out that the smells started AFTER you put the muffler on, but don't want to blame the muffler, end yourself.

Farsyde December-17th-2002 10:26 PM

check you muffler for leaks. Also, did you get a catback system? Do you still have the stock cat? Spray some soapy water along the entire exhaust and see if any bubbles form. I've noticed this problem on many cars that use a catback system where the gaskets do not make an air tight seal and leak exhaust that really really stinks. What other mods do you have on your car other than an exhaust?

Many mufflers that are not canister style contain a cylinder with hole in it (looks like a cheese grader) that has fiberglass or some other material to dampen the sound from the muffler. This material could be touching the "cheese grader" or even be exposed to the exhaust and is slowely burning off.

Also check all the seals that are involved in the exhaust system for leaks. Look at the exhaust manifold gasket and see if you can scape off some carbon with your fingers at each of these points.

Let us know if this helps

My P5 has a sulphurous smell coming from the exhaust too. It's a stock exhaust and I have had the P5 for over a year now.

Farsyde December-18th-2002 12:32 AM

every car gets carbon buildup on the exhuast tip. It's the leftover non-combusted hydrocarbons that "crystalize" on the muffler. When direct port fuel injection is introduced it should all but eliminate the leftover gas and improve mileage too.

Redfyre December-18th-2002 06:37 AM

I'm with you Ambient.

Whoa......its seems some people here are under the impression that certain members do not appreciate the help and suggestions that have been handed out. Farsyde,LeungWingKei,JStand6, thanks for your opinions on this topic. You see some other people feel its nesessary to be around......or to be.....ummm lets say be the "ambient" one.......Redfyre is just getting involved because he just wants too. Hence he is being "ambient" to someones rectum area...... Not to be rude but this seems like whats going on......Not trying to start a war but.......explain to me how someone else's text can give you the impression that they are being ignorant? That like saying i'm extremely pissed right now and am crying as i type this. Think before you speak, thats what i was always told.
