Short Shifter damaging tranny?
 

I remember a while ago i installed a B&M short shifter and i had it on for a couple of weeks but it felt like it was making my tranny grind or somethin, especially when i shifted fast. It also seemed like it made shifting into reverse REALLY hard. I was thinking about putting it on again and maybe doing a better job this time. Has anyone had their B&M ss on for a long time who feels like it's jacked up their tranny?

Had the B&M on for a loooong time now, nothing but smooth shifting. I did the install properly the first time, just saying I don't know if you made any mistake that you didn't catch. I'd give it another shot, it won't mess up your tranny at all.

Mine took about 2 weeks to "break in" and loosen up all the way. Just give it some time and take your time on the install and you'll be fine.

Because the throws are shorter, making you shift faster, you could be "outrunning" your synchros forcing them to mesh before they're ready, causing that grinding noise you hear. Your synchros might be getting mashed together causing premature wear and premature failure of your synchros.

Yeah that kinda explains what i'm experiencing PhotoPro5. It doesn't seem like "breaking it in" will help, and im pretty sure i had it for at least 2 weeks now that i think about it. How come no one else gets this effect?

Shift a little more slowly and see if reduces the grinding. You might want to try another brand/viscosity of gearbox oil as well. I wouldn't have the slightist idea which one to use, so I'm not going to make any recommendations. I can't keep them all straight.

I didn't opt for a short shifter because I was concerned about the possible long term wear and tear on the gearbox. I got only the bushing instead.

Redline MT-90 tends to be one of the most popular gear oils. Also, when I said the short shifter won't damage the tranny, it won't by itself, but it leads to a greater potential as PhotoPro showed us. You could do the same thing with the stock shifter if you really wanted to, it's all up to the driver.

Yeah, when i shift slowly, it works fine and it doesn't grind, but then what's the point of getting a short shifter if i can't shift faster?! I had a TRD short shifter on my Celica GT-S, and it was nothing but awesomeness. No grindy crap or anything. Seems like every mod i do to my protege has major drawbacks and sacrifices.
