shifter vibrates
 

i'm new to manual transmissions.... i was wondering if this is normal.... the stick shifter vibrates a bit and you can feel the rpms of the engine on the shifter. does this occur on every car with a manual tranny?
or is it something my mazda dealership should be looking at to fix?

I was gonna bring this up to my dealer if vibration didn't get better also. We have about 1500 miles now. It's not terrible, but daughter's '90 civic with 140K is dead smooth. Maybe shifter is better insulated or maybe engine is just smoother. Oh well...

That's just the way it is. It's nothing to be alarmed at. I don't want a car that totally isolates every sensory input. No, I don't want the interior to be a resonating, vibrating sensory overload, but I would rather get some feedback from the primary controls.

Bring it up at a dealer. Just be ready for their normal spiel: "...operating within manufacturer specifications..." Really never bothered me. If it bothers you that much... wear mittens??

I recall reading somewhere on this board that the Hondas might have a cabled linkage to the shifter (which smooths out a lot of the vibration) where as the Mazdas have a direct mechanical linkage.

Feedback = good. Your car is fine :)

Honda's use a cable shifter, wich is why you don't feal feedback in the shifter and it tends to have the silky fealing ,... our cars don't use a cable crap ... If you look under the car , you will see a long rod , shift linkage, leading to the transmission ,.. that is why you feal every vibration the engine makes and u get so much feedback ,... I had a jetta with the cable shifter and it was all to weird

thanks for all the responses...this site is really great. i also just found out from a friend that his volkswagen 1.6l manual does the same so it's all cool now.

Yeah and you won't feel that shitty "pop" feeling when shifting quickly with a direct linkage compared to some cable shifters. Go drive a newer Sentra hard and you will see what I mean, it sucks...
