rpm limits

I am planning to get mazdaspeed camshafts, does these enable me to reach higher rpm's like up to 8000? I am able to get equipment to set the rev limiter, but will the lifters be able to take the 8000 rpm's safely?

macdaddyslomo February-12th-2004 11:35 AM

no.

Question about over reving

Do the Mazdaspeeds redline around 8k? I've hit 7200 or more a few times in my stock P5, trying to beat someone to the end of an entrance ramp getting on the freeway. Never felt the first vibration, no sign of the rev limiter (I don't know where it's supposed to be set).

Here's the question:
Am I correct to assume the MSPs and the regular old 130hp engines have the same crank, rods, bearings, etc.?

If that's the case I won't worry about over reving once in a while.

i am not too sure about the same internals, i would assume that they are the same if not very close, but mine hits the rev limiter at about/just under 7500, that's why i figured i may be able to hit 8000 with higher lift cams(if i was able to reset rev limiter to 8000)i wouldn't think that 500 rpm would be too much more stress on the engine...?

As I said in my question, I'm already assuming. I was asking if someone knew.

i don't remember exactly what the rev limiter is, but my wife hit it in my p5...threw a damn CEL...and my friend who had a msp would hit it in his daily.

why would you need to go over 8K rpm's? your power band does fall off at a certain rpm, ya know. and i'm pretty sure it's well before 8K

prtygy22 February-13th-2004 12:47 PM

yeah, i agree that it may not really be necesarry and i'm not exactly sure what rpm the powerband ends, but it would be kinda cool to be able to take the good 'ol protege up to 8 grand though.

Topher February-13th-2004 02:13 PM

but if your powerband falls off prior to 8K, you'll feel a huge loss of power...kinda like lightly hitting the brakes...not only that, but the stress you'll be putting on the engine at 8K. it's nothing to brag about or anything.

No it wouldn't, it would be stupid.

there, i didn't have to say it after all.

Why do you want to reve higher?, the peack hp in the stock engine (according to mazada charts) is at 6000RPM

From what I have heard the connecting rods in these engins have low (extention) capabalities.

PS: What is the correct word for extention that fits there?Sorry memory blanck.

macdaddyslomo February-14th-2004 11:50 PM

redline is at 7200 rpms and by then you are well ovr your power pand and revving for nothing at 6500 you are at peak power, including the Mazdaspeed....and the engines internals are EXACTLY the same as any other 2 liter protege stock

Ed 16v February-15th-2004 11:15 AM

There should be a fuel cut off about 7.2-7.5k

no point in getting it to go upto 8k when some other guy who knows his power drops @ 5.8k (for example) shifts and your still trying to drag yours upto 8k :(

no real reason but the cams will allow you a slightly higher redline of maybe about 400-500rpm only I would say ??

can anyone clarify for me in case im off track :)

Phantom Cruiser February-15th-2004 11:30 AM

why don't you dyno the car and see where you are actually making power? then you can more accurately determine your shift points.

yup that would be basically the best way

and yeah i've already broken a connecting rod, and it went through the block, and long story short, i had to get a new engine luckily it was covered under warranty.

my rev limiter on my 1.8L is just under 7000RPMS
and most of the time i dunt need to take it that far

my peak power is at 6000RPM so i shift at redline (can't remember but i heard that was the best place to shift the 1.8Ls)

remember that we aint a honda, that continue to make power into redline, and next thing u knwo is BOOM!! bye bye engine

so basically if u want the fastest car, the best would be to dyno and find your optimum shift points.

until then just shift right at or right before redline, if u want to be the fastest, its the best bet until u can dyno, IMHO

theres no point in trying to go faster by over revving, because you won't be going faster, you will be going slower.
take a guy with exact same car, mods, power. if you continue to over rev and the other guy shifts at his optimum shift points, geuss what, you are going to lose.

revving doesn't neccesarily mean how fast you can go, it is a factor but thas about it

take a viper (I hate vipers, but good example) they redline at like what 5000RPMS (i dunno but i knwo its low) but look at how fast they can go...

just my .02 cents

P.S. I cant rev past 7000RPM and i styll broke a connecting rod, even tho i am the 1.8L, we are styll both F series engines, which are quite similiar, so remember that. (and i don't hit my rev limiter much) but i do hit the top speed governor
