Reverse gear problem?

When climbing in my parked 2002 P5, I have trouble getting into the reverse gear to back out of the parking spot. I'll throw the shifter into gear but it doesn't sit properly. I'll let out the clutch and there is no engagement. Once engage the clutch again, the gears have spun and I can usually get the shifter seated properly and get on with my life.

I don't remember this issue when I first bought the car. Is this an issue that needs to be addressed, or is it a problem with the loose nut driving the car?

Thx...

I have the same issue with the P5, I was goign to get it checked out the next time I happened to be at the dealer. (or if it got worse sooner) I usually have to release the parking brake and even let it roll back a bit. Rev matching doesn't seem to work for it though (wonder why:rolleyes: )

It happens. All of my cars (all manual gearboxes) have done this. Sometimes it happens with first, sometimes with reverse. I don't think it's necessary to bring the car in to have it inspected. Worry about it when it starts grinding into gear, at a stop.

I have this same problem almost every morning. Are there any service bulletins out for this problem?? What causes this??

I've had the same thing in every manual I've ever owned... that's just how the transmission works. As long as the gears don't grind, you're not hurting anything.

And if you have trouble getting it into reverse put it in a different gear first and then try reverse it works for me. and I also have the same problem everyday and that is what i do, i hope this helps.

I do that... it sometimes works...

or just double-clutch a few times until it works

Cadmonkey Aug 15, 2003 01:55 PM

That's what i do. It's just a pain in the ass. And it looks bad when you got a hot date in the passenger seat wondering why your car wont go into gear.

the above described "problem" is NORMAL....its caused by the gears themselves....they are straight cut and not syncronized in the tranny like the forward gears are.....thus SOMETIMEs they don't line up just right and you have to fiddle with it to get them there....

your owners manual it even describes this very thing.

Guess I shoudl have read the owner's manual more thoroughly! I'm not surprised that it's normal, I have just never ran into the problem with the other manual cars I've driven. This is the first one that was actually mine to drive so I guess it just doens't happen too often. For some reason it just seemed to happen a lot of the time over a short period of time, don't know why and was a bit annoying.

Owners manual??? What's that???
