Reset the computer???
 

while the board was down...I was out there quenching my thirst for knowledge.....yeah I was reading OTHER boards and sites....anyway.....on one of the sites I was on there was a tech section that covered bolt ons and simple upgrades....in one particular they added a CAI ram intake....the last thing it mentioned was that after the install you needed to reset your computer by removing the positive lead from teh battery for 30 seconds to 1 minute. the tech article didn't say WHY. Does anyone know why you would NEED to do this?

As far as I know there is no NEED to do it, but it's often helpful. It forces the ECU to reset and it will adjust to the increased airflow accordingly.

For instance, on maxima.org, it isn't uncommon for someone to notice a difference with their y-pipe for a few days, if not a week or two after they install it. It takes time for the ECU to re-adjust.

Hres what I know on this subject. On Subaru Imprezas when you do any mod to the car you need to undo the battery for about an hour or two. Then hook it up and let the engine run idle for about 10-20 minutes. This way the engine relearns the fuel-air. But in my old Pontiac GA the computer had ADD and couldn't learn shit. I have no idea if Mazda ECUs can relearn or not. But it would be a good idea to try it anyway. You just lose all the settings on your stereo.

thanks......later after I made that post one of my Maxima.org buddies told me the same thing......and seeing as how its a snap to reset the radio channels ..... its not a biggie. and worth a shot......especially seeing as how I will be doing a short throw shifter and a cat back exhaust install at the same time....I won't have to sit around and wait.....I will just unhook the battery before I start any of the installs and it will be ready to go back on when I get all done.

1. remove NEGATIVE battery connector

2. press brake pedal for 30secs

3. Re-Install NEGATVIE battery connector.

The reason why you press the brakes, is that the brakes take alot of power/curent, so when you press them after the battery is disconnected, it will drain any power left over in capacitors and other circuitry.

By reseting the ECU right away, it learns much faster, if not immediately, rather than letting it fend for itself.

Now, i am not positive this is the same for OBD2 cars, but i would have to assume so.

well after reading the install instructions for the Injen CAI, which are mediocre at best......the last thing it tells you do to is to replace the positive terminal of the battery.....but of course NEVER does it ever tell you to remove it! lol geeeeez these guys need to get on the ball!

My stupid GMC must have ADD too. It told me the O2 sensor was bad, so I replaced it and reset the comp. Light's still on and the stupid shit still says code O2, even after disconnecting the "(-)" cable. It couldn't be because I disconnected the EGR could it.
