Redline MT90: Worth it?
Is it worth switching to this stuff?
What grade is the correct one for an 03' Pro? |
I switched to it when I first got the car. At the time I noticed a big difference in smoothness. Now it seems commonplace. I use 90W.
|
I heard Royal Purple is better.... true ?...

I used the MTL, a noticeable improvement.

When replacing the tranny oil - I did a search and found someone that already did it....they mentioned that the fill hole is angled downward? WTF?
|
yeah, you get it from the top....at least I did. Drain it from the bottom. cap it off and get a long rubber funnel hose and pour it in from the top...it's a little awkward but with 2 people it should take no more than 30 minutes.
|
Whoa...so the fill hole is on top, but angled downward...?
You can get to it from under the hood? |
I opened the fill hole from the bottom ,opened the drain hole...drained everything....capped off the drain plug and had a friend lower me a ruber tube. I held it into the drain hole while he poured it in from the top.

MT90 is fantastic!! I drove my ES for about a year on the Mazda stuff so when I switched the improvement was amazing. Changing it was a little awkward, I did it myself but I would go with Rod's advice if I had to do it over again. The shifting is "snick-snick" now with the Kartboy bushing and the MT90.

I found a heavy oil pump, specifically for filling diffs, trannys, etc.... from the store I work at. It looks like one of those manual air pumps for bike tires. It's like a big arsed hypodermic needle. Suck in the oil, push it out
After recently installing my SS kit, I got a good look at the fill and drain holes.....How exactly does the oil stay in the tranny, once you put the recommended amount in, if the fill hole is angled downward? Does the level simply not reach that high?? |
I used Amsoil 75w 90, best $20 bucks i have spent

I talked to a guy who owns a Jeep performance shop about MT90 -- he said to go with Royal Purple GearMax 80W140, as opposed to the 75W90 the manual calls for. Apparently, this stuff has been selling like mad and he says it will be perfectly fine for the tranny, despite not being what they call for. It's slightly cheaper than MT90 over here, and is supposedly as good, if not better stuff.
Thoughts? |
dont do it....never use a different viscosity than what the manual calls for.
If this guy is so certain there won't be any problems have him give you a written warranty saying he'll cover any repairs needed due to improper lubrication and stress. It's not worth the couple dollar difference. |
