Rattle...PLEASE HELP!!

I Have a 2000 LX Protege 5 spd 60k. I started to notice a metal rattling noise. It sounds like a heat cover weldpoints are gone. I was wondering where I can check to verify my hunch. Also if anyone has had similar problems can you post your problem and resolution.

Thanks Newb Protege Owner!!

Could you please specify where the rattling seems to be coming from so we can help you deduce the problem?

stipe007 July-18th-2003 12:35 AM

I forget to mention the rattle only happens when I use the gas pedal.

stipe007 July-18th-2003 12:36 AM

as well it seems like the noise is from the engine.

Have you already ruled out the infamous 'cold start rattle'? About between 1500-3000 RPMs before the engine heats up, the emissions system makes a rattling sound per say when you hit the gas.

I have not viewed the RPM's when the rattle occurs, I will now and I'll get back to you. The odd thing is that it started last week. I have had the car for three weeks so maybe I never noticed it before. Is there anyway to fix the cold start rattle if it is that.

I'm sorry, but the best way to diagnose a rattle is NOT over the internet. Anything we offer will be a vauge guess, at best! If you can't find where or what it is coming from, take it to the nearest shop that has mechanics you trust. They will be much better at finding the rattle than we could.

Wow Really you can't fix the rattle over the Internet. I cannot believe that I had a couple of people from other forums fix some problems. Maybe I'll post the walkthrough I have on how to install an RJ-45 connection in your Protege. If I had a mechanic I trust I would not need to post.

I would like to thank you for pointing out the obvious!!!!!

Calm down man. There are a million possibilites, and what he's saying is that we would have to hear it to tell you exactly what it is. We also don't know if you have made any mods or done anything that could have caused this either. We also are unaware of your knowledge and understanding of cars, so we cannot tell how accurate you are. For example, when you say it's a heat shield rattling, it may sound like one to a newbie, but to an expert he may know for a fact it isn't. I'm not trying to rip on you or anything, I'm just trying to explain where njaremka is coming from.

I understand that. I am not looking for diffinitive answer. Telling me it is hard to diagnose over the internet is an understatement. All I was asking is if someone had idea's. Which they did (*points to you*).

I had a rattle after about 2 months. Turned out to be a relay under the instrument panel close to steering column. It had a little metal brackett attached that was hitting a bolt. I don't know where it was supposed to go, but I secured it with a ty=wrap and I haven't heard it since. Good luck.
