Questions about shortshifters....

I have a few questions about short shifters,
Im considering getting a kartboy and am just curious... is it just a shorter stick? or is there other stuff involved like geometery?

Is cutting down my stick and putting the bushings on going to have the same effect as the short shifter or different?

thanks in advance
:winkyum:

No cutting the shifter will not have the same effect. The pivot point on the SS are diffrent, that what makes the throw shorter.

yes...a true short shifter actually changes the geometry of the shifter itself, thus truely shortening the throw.

NO, shortening your stocker and putting the bushings will not truely give you a short shifter....

Listen to them, they're right. As far as how short the actual shifter is, the kartboy is the shortest. The RVM and B&M are the same height, which are about 1/2-1 inch taller than the kartboy. I don't know how high the TWM and Pacesetters are though. I don't recommend cutting down your shifter. You might actually make it slightly harder to shift.

i have the kartboy...imo, its too short. :D

im using the stock knob raised 15mm and its still a little too
short. the reason is because the driver seat is too high. it
makes it too hard to reach the lever. i bet if i had some race
seats, the length is perfect.

do you wanna try the short kartboy knuckleball knob on your
stock shifter? i can sell that to you. i have the dark one with
blue and black emblems. :) the knob alone will shorten
the length about 1.5inches. let me know. i'll sell it for $30
shipped in the US...its brand spanken new, used one day.
(new is $40 + shipping). for normal driving, this might feel
better than getting the short shifter. let me know.

but for the real deal for spirited drivers like me,
i would recommend the kartboy and a taller knob...im thinking
about getting another greddy knob (im using one on the WRX
with kartboy ss). those knobs are great. :)

Unless you count the Pacesetter adjustable. 80% reduction in throw. =D One more week.......

ive heard about people having problems due to having short shifters?? like linkage probs or something? anyone know what they were talking about?

kenchan May-13th-2003 09:07 PM

if youre talking about the shifter hitting the heatshield under the car, its not a big deal. especially with the kartboy, you can just
give the heatsheild a mild tug and it will clear the shifter. :)

not sure of other problems...i dont have any on mine.

well technically would cutting it be a Short shifter.

but what kartboy/ b&m and twm sell are short THROW shifters. I love my TWM. i wont say its better the b&m and kartboy, i have never tried one of theres and they are all good companys. i mainly got the twm cause i was already getting stuff from corksport and they had them. also i like the heatsheild spacers.

yah, actually, i downloaded TWM's instructions to do my kartboy. install. hahaha. :D

excellent instructions.

today i took out the kartboy bushings and went back to stock bushings. i think i like the softer gates more than the really knotchy kartboy feel. if the shifter was a tad longer i think the bushings would work better, but for me i like the shifter with factory bushings.

i need to get a taller knob next. :)
