Question about pistons
 

Would I have to do anything extra to my engine if I was to get the Mazdaspeed pistons with 10.7 to 1 compression? And the Mazdaspeed intake and exhaust cam set?

there is no such thing. Your terminology is off....

The higher compression pistons from Mazda are J-spec pistons. Same with the cams. Nothing special about them. They offer a little better lift and duration but you'd probably get a better gain out of a good intake and full exhaust.

p.s. the cost of those pistons and the labor to put them in is going to be HIGH. I would look into sort of turbo/supercharger instead.

Alright, I was planning on getting a new intake (Injen RD CIA) and full exhuast (obx headers, Borla or Magnaflow exhuast). just felt like seeing what it would take to have a slightly higher compression and more lift / duration with some diferent cams. :)

I would recommend the Ebay CAI that most of us have. (Do a search to make sure you get the right one). Also, the obx header is nice. There is also a guy named Wagner who makes a shorty header that bolts up to the stock cat or he can make a hi-flow cat/downpipe for you. Also, there is another company that supposedly offers headers for our car but I'm going to be looking into them next week so I don't have any details on them just yet but they are a 4-2-1 design where as the obx is a 4-1 design. 4-2-1 is slightly better for midrange power but I doubt it's anything you'll be able to tell since it's only about a 2hp difference on a dyno.

Borla is a nice catback, racing beat, magna flow, and corksport all have nice CB's for you to.

yeah we get them off ebay and they are typically $48-60shipped. If you do a search on this forum for "ebay CAI" you'll see pictures and discussions from everyone talking about where to get them and who to get them from.

But is the performance still there? compared to the Injen, AEM etc... do they compare or not.

You may get better gains from the basic bolt ons, but cams and pistons will definitely help.
It's all about combination. Better flow is a good thing. Bumping up your compression from 9:1 to 10.7:1 will make a big difference I'm sure.

actually without the fuel and spark control to take advantage of the higher compression, you wont see much of a gain from the pistons...ESPECIALLY when taking into consideration the labor involved in the install

You said in another forum that the stock injectors would be fine and the labor issue is not a problem at all.

stock injectors ARE fine for an NA buildup, but you still need to control how much fuel and spark is being delivered to get the power out of high comp pistons..stock fuel maps are HARDLY maxing the duty cycle on the injectors....and show me where i said labor wouldnt be a problem...quite the opposite...installing pistons is quite labor intensive

N/A motors tend to run stronger when slightly leaner than rich. So he's prolly right about stock injectors doin the job.
