project protege 1.6 turbo
 
hi, im going to begin my project 1.6 turbo protege, and i have a few questions that im hoping someone can answer me, first off the mods i will be using:

apex safc
t25 turbo internally wastegate
fmic
fuel pressure regulator
fuel pump( dont know yet) do i need one for this or can i use the oem one?
injectors, i don't know yet which to put on, any info here will be apreciated
custom manifold
hks ssq bov

here is the thing, i want to know how much psi i can push on the stock pistons and rods without being on any risk. i want to be on a safe margin. im going turbo because i want a little more power, i can't stand the aceleration of slow cars and unfourtanetely the 1.6 na doesn't have good acceleration. im doing the work myself with my brother, whe are pretty nolegeable making turbo cars, but this is going to be the first mazda weve ever done and i don't know much of the safe margins here, also at what afr i should be running when tuned????

forgot to add, ive owned the car for 5 years and i like it very much how it is, but making it turbo will be more fun hahaha. goota love the sound of a turbo.

afaik, people have gone as high as 12-14psi on the stock internals of the 1.6L gen 3's

He doesn't stop in here as much as he used to, unfortunately...he hangs out on clubprotege
daily I think because he's a mod over there, iirc...but that forum's 3rd-gen section is even slower than here, if you can believe it.

Still, if you are serious he is the man to talk to. He's got an amazing sleeper.

you really should start out no higher than 6-7 psi, this will double your stock power ...stock pump will be allright to start fpr that psi, but stock injectors are shit....miata ones are drop in and plug and play and will almost handle double the fuel...afr should be about 12:1 or lower

hi bro, thanks for your help, well first of all my question was the fuel pump but if you say the stock one can handle it then its ok, my other question is the flow-meter how do i installed it or where when i do the intercooler piping, and the injectors i was thinking of putting rx7 460cc that should be enough and if im not wrong i think they're direct drop with no modifications. ohh i forgot bro my injectors are high or low impedeance????.

please keep in mind that this is my daily driver thats why i want to be safe because if i brake this car then i have to use an Rx7 that is in the garage everyday lol and thats not cool because it sucks gas like anything i ever seen. i want my protege to be a reliable car being turbo'ed, i just want some extra power and turbo is the solution.

if you want reliable stick with low boost, 6-7 psi(stock for that T25's wastegate) should give you around 150+ whp...the miata injectors would be better, they are around 255cc...460's are overkill for your application...

by flow meter, I assume you mean the MAF...I would but it before the turbo and use a recirculating bypass valve rather than a blow off valve,

You can go totally nuts with the 1.6l were talking some 30 psi is possible on stock internals (possibly more no ones tried it). So as far as reliability is concerned you've got very little to worry about at a resonable boost.

OEM fuel pump is fine but stick injectors are only good for 4 psi. theGoldpro ran some 15 with the stockers but made pretty much no power as the car was amazingly lean. So new injectors are high on the list of priorities. And thegoldpro has left to go to imazda no one goes to club protege anymore.

thanks for all the info bro's, so i should put miata injectors instead of rx7 ok, im looking at ones but they say there 254cc no big difference in my opinion, 150whp is more than enough for what i want my car, it should be a great sleeper, ill stick with what your saying bro since this is not my familiar territory, ive only work on rotary engines so this is another territory for me.
