Problems after TWM shifter install
I just had my TWM short shifter with Kartboy bushings installed on my 2002 P5 today. Now its making a funny ticking noise. It sound like one of those cinema projectors, the ones the reels of film that spin or like a fan. When i accelerate the ticking becomes louder and faster. Any ideas on what it could be. Im going back to the mechanic tomorrow, but i wanted to know if anyone has had this problem or know what it is.

It might be your heat shield rubbing on the bottom of the new shift lever. It's pretty simple to just bend it down a little.

No, that can't be it. The TWM comes with the Heat shield spacers.

Need more info man...where is the ticking coming from? The shifter colum, the gearbox, the wheels?? Is it always there, or is it inconsistent?

Most of my noise happens when i accelerate. Also when i release the accelerator, it starts to make a whinning noise. When i said that it sounds like a cinema projector i ment that it sounds like the 'Wheel of Fortune' spinner, or when kids put cardboard on the wheels of their push bikes so it makes a 'ticking' sound when it hits the spokes.
Also the sound seems to be coming from the engine bay, or the area where the drive shaft is, or simple put, from the front area of the passenger side. It's a constant sound which it's speed and loudness changes according to how i'm accelerating at the time. |
Just because the TVM comes with the spacers doesn't mean the mechanic but them in. I put my own SS in and I can easily see how the heat shield could make the noise you're describing. Also, make sure the snap ring that holds the shifter down is in the grooves it's supposed to be in.

The only thing I can think of besides internal gearbox damage is a bad CV joint. Are all the boots intact and packed with grease? I doesn't take much more than a piece of gravel to slice one of those at speed...and if gone unnoticed for a while will end up making a clicking/binding sound which changes frequency with wheel speed and engine load...

Definitely before you take your car to the shop, try bending the heatshield downward at the front edge by the lever. Mine was making a similar noise (with my Kartboy lever & bushings) when there wasn't enough clearance. It's really easy to bend down and you'll know right away if it's fixed when you drive it. And it can be bent back upwards if that's not the problem.
