Poll: Is it worth it?

My car's mods are:

PR5 mods: Greddy cat-back, OBX header, WELLSpeed midpipe, WELLSpeed CAI, R-R Racing UDP, MP3 ECU, KartBoy shifter bushings, shortened shifter with a billet Mustang knob, Redline fluid, stainless clutch line, rubber-filled factory motor mount, Progress springs, Progress 22mm rear swaybar, RSL Limited 17x7" +48mm wheels with Sumitomo HTR + 215/40/ZR17 tires (Spring/Summer), Polished PR5 wheels with Kumho Ecsta 712 205/50/ZR16 (Fall/Winter), and Dave B rings

I am getting ready to install the ported intake manifold and the J-Spec intake cam. I just want a mild improvement in power and throttle response/revability. I do not want to go to custom cams I have to shim the hell out of.

So my question is: Is it at all worth it to add the Mazdaspeed Exhaust Cam?

I search and search, but there seems to be no agreement. I just need to know now so I can do it while I have it apart at the end of this month.

Also, does the exhuast cam take excessive shimming, or just a little?

I would have to say that you WILL see gains however the ms exhaust cam is nothing more than a re-pinned stock intake cam. No sense in buying one when you will already have a spare!

I thought the MS exhaust cam had more duration.

Ok. What does "re-pinned" mean?

re-clocked. It's not in the same seating position as it would be if it were a regular exhaust cam. Basically you'll have to notch the pulley in the correct location to mount the cam in the correct position to make the timing marks line up correctly.

As far as I know they are identical....i may be wrong though as I've never done this mod.

Well I didn't see any mods on the P5, but if you want a little more hp and a better rev I would go with a header and a light weight flywheel.
I got the wagner shorty header used for 200 and the fly wheel for 200. and man did it wake up the car. Smooth quick revs all the way to 5500 rpm. There is a guy on the other forum that just dynoed his car with the same mods minuse the CAI and he is at 118 whp. so that isn't too bad.

yeah, thats pretty good seeing as my stock p5 did 98whp. 20wh gain from a header and flywheel is nice.

I don't know about using them both but with your mods I would definitely do the flywheel. Maybe change the UDP for one the same size but lighter.

I'm still looking for the MP3 ECU. Damit!

Yeah...but not all P5s (or Foci for that matter!) will dyno the same. I think I've seen about a 95-105 sweep for base dynos. Mine was 102.1 I believe.

Guess you need to get the car that the drunkard wasn't working on

You still haven't found one at a reasonable price? I would pay no more than $100 for it.

Oh, and I put mine in finally (scars to prove it!) but I need to get it to the dyno. Perhaps you should wait for my results to see if I'm going to keep it!

Well what are you waiting for?!!! LOL

About my last post, I ment that I wasn't so sure on using the UDP and a lightweight (is it lite or light?) flywheel.

The lightweight flywheel is going to come when I replace the clutch (whether I need it or not) at around 35,000 miles.

I see so much disagreement on the exhaust cam, that I beleive my money would be better spent somewhere else.

import_tuner19 May-14th-2005 08:22 PM

yeah i wasnt sure about the cams either, cause i was wanting to buy the mazdaspeed intake and exhaust cams after i got the WOMP or before depending on how hard it is to install..........well come to think of it the only way to install the cams would be to pull the motor out and install them..........and thats a lot of work
