P5 vs. Focus SVT Engine

I think we all know that Ford and Mazda have been married forever and I'm just wondering the differences are between the SVT and P5 motors? How did they squeeze 170hp out of their 2.0L, are they not the same motor?

Does anyone know off hand the differences?

JoshP5 September-9th-2007 08:45 AM

They're totally different engines. As far as I know there are no shared parts.

_Kansei_ September-9th-2007 11:34 AM

The P5 motor is circa like.. 1992 :P

With a different intake manifold and ECU the MP3 managed 140hp on our motor.. but that's just shifting the powerband mostly, not really crazy newfound power.

The only sharing between Mazda and the Focus is that the current north american Focus uses the MZR engines (2.0 and 2.3) from the 3.. but of course they aren't totally the same.

well there's your answer.. high compression, different head, etc vs the normal 2.0 zetec.. but yeah not the same engine as our FS-DE at all. the zetec was made in Mexico

These additions coupled with an increased 10.2:1 compression ratio bumped horsepower from 130 to 170, while still achieving good fuel economy and emissions. For the transmission, Ford went to German manufacturer Getrag to provide a six-speed manual which is shared in the Mini Cooper S. This transmission was a twin layshaft design, and included a dual mass flywheel to eliminate vibration.

Wow thanks, I just wondered cause my neighbors friend just picked one up a cheap to be his daily driver and when he left yesterday the thing launched and just peeled the tires off, really cool.

JoshP5 September-9th-2007 05:36 PM

Yeah, it's a pretty nice package. But the Focus looks better out-of-focus.

*crosses fingers for euro focus st to appear in my garage*

mmm

JoshP5 September-10th-2007 11:13 AM

Killer animations. Looks better than the SVT.

Hyperion September-10th-2007 12:03 PM

haha looking closer at the rear bumper, it comes with backup sensors for the 2 foot tall people that may be hiding there.
I like the maximum 150mph top speed where legal lol

found some other pictures, in the form of backgrounds http://www.desktopmachine.com/cars/2...pers.html?t=84

Damn that's a nice car considering it's made by Ford.

JoshP5 September-10th-2007 12:53 PM

Ford makes some nice cars, they just sell them in Europe. We get the Taurus.

It's on the S40/Mazda3 chassis, though the 5-cyl turbo is obviously no Mazda engine *looks toward Volvo*

so killer looking. love everything about it! I can't get enough of that 'kinetic design' style euro Ford uses (mondeo, s-max, focus, and others)

in my eyes it totally kicks the butt of the Audi A3 and for a bit less money!

It's for real a 5-cyl? That's odd..

_Kansei_ September-10th-2007 03:38 PM

it's not that weird.. it's not like it's a V engine, it's inline. It gives you half the power boost of a V6 vs i4 but without the full fuel economy hit of the V6.

JoshP5 September-10th-2007 03:59 PM

That stuff has more to do with displacement (and other factors) than configuration. The I-5 was more likely selected for packaging reasons.

_Kansei_ September-10th-2007 04:07 PM

I'm not sure what packaging reasons though, as a 2.5 i4 vs 2.5 i5.. the i5 is going to be longer. I know volvo has been doing 5 cylinders since at least the mid 80s so I would imagine part of the reason was that a 4-cylinder of that displacement would have been VERY unrefined back then. A 2.5 4 is hardly refined even today.

JoshP5 September-10th-2007 04:15 PM

Haha--remember the Porsche 968--3 liters of inline 4 fury! But balance shafts tamed the intrinsic secondary balance problems.

Ford's engine selection probably had to do with what was available in the parts bin, too.

good call on the volvo engine http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...cleId=108108#5
selling for $30,611 U.S. if they bring it here I hope they drop the price a bit, vw gti mk5's are fully loaded for that in the states

my problem with the svt from was there wasnt any advertising about it, the only reason i found out about it existed was bc a friend drove 5 hours to buy one lol ford has too much money in their trucks and mustangs imo

maybe when i graduate college i can get a job in europe lol

_Kansei_ September-10th-2007 08:14 PM

The euro focus does not really compete with the Gti .. think Audi A3.. which can get over 36k no issue.

competes with the Volvo C30 as well.
