Overdrive Question
 

I have an 02 ES Sedan but my starts are very slow I did do a search so don't tell me about doing that but I didn't find the answer I was looking for... My question is if I turn off O/D will my pro take off quicker or at least accelerate quicker?? Or maybe even peel out??

I think the answer is "No."

I am pretty sure that in the proteges the O/D selection is basically a switch that determines whether the transmission is able to go into it's 4th gear (0.7:1) from third (1:1). Basically it is there for fuel economy.

When on the highway when you floor it the tranmission should kick down so there really is no performance adavatage (that I can see) to leaving it out of O/D. When accelerating from a stop you are not even in those gears, so it should make no difference what so ever.

the car goes faster when O/D is off but is it safe to leave on all the time since the RPMs are higher?

.. is like owning a 5-speed car and never shifting into 5th. Which has certain advantages, no doubt, but you lose out on fuel economy, engine revs are high etc.

All the O/D switch does is make only gears 1, 2, 3 available to the transmission. It is usually provided so it can be turned off on a gentle downslope, or if you wish to keep your revs up in the 30mph or higher speed ranges (I think at minimal acceleration or during coasting, it would otherwise shift into 4th or O/D at around 35 mph or higher).

And no - it will NOT make your car faster, or help it peel out :(

O/D is just 4th gear in our cars. When the Overdrive is OFF then the car will just stay in 3rd gear. Also when Overdrive is off it will not change the way your car starts off. However once you reach 3rd gear with overdrive off, your car will seem to have more power at higher RPM's. But it will affect your gas mileage.

Like previously stated, overdrive will enable the 4th gear.

The only time it will make you faster is if you are crusing along at 30-40 mph and then step on it, with overdrive off, you will already be in 3rd gear so you will be quicker than if your transmission has to down shift from 4th first when you are in overdrive.

if you wanna make ur car peel out you can brake tourque. im not saying its good for ur car, or anything liek that, so dont flame me for saying this, and im not saying that over time it wont break ur car. but its safer than doing neutral drops.

put ur car in drive, and when ur stopped press down the brakes pretty hard, then rev ur engine up to like 2,000 or 2500 rpm's with the brakes pressed, then let up the breaks really fast and floor it.

Heh. That's a good way to peel an automatic. Or just crank your handbrake. When it gets to high enough rpms just release it. Again dangerous to your e-brake cable. But hey.

I think this was discussed on the 1st gen forum. We all agreed that it could wear out your tranny prematurely. Forgot what the reasong was though. If you want you can do a search in the 1st gen as to what people said

The best use for turning the OD off is for passing at higher speeds, you don't have to floor it to get it to kick down a gear, or for going up or down long inclines with the RPMs closer to the engine's sweet spot. It definitely doesn't affect acceleration through the lower gears.
