OBX Headers hp Claims

I kinda made this thread also cause a lot of ppl seem to have a hard time finding headers.

OBX Headers

1.6L: 12-14hp (that gain seems to be a little high IMO)

2.0L: 10-12hp

1.8L: Why don't they make one for the 1.8l? I'm surprised they made one for the 1.6l instead. They skipped that engine.

Will the 2.0 headers fit the 1.8l?

bosalperformance.com/catalog/exhaust_headers_cat
Bosal makes them for the 2.0L. Also the mx-6 headers can be fabricated to fit from what I've read.

rr-racing.com
also make headers for the 2.0

HPracing.com/ makes them for 2.0

APC makes them for the 1.6 and I think 2.0 also

Aerospeed Headers
Aerospeed makes them for the 1.6 and 2.0

Mazda HP motorsports

MazdaSpeed MazdaSpeed headers from corksport

Auto EXE

Traveler's headers

This is all I'm listing for right now. May add some more. I know there are several more, but you just need to look hard.
I hope that this will help people out more.

2.0 headers will fit on the 1.8L motor same fs motor just head a little diffrent in the inside.

HAS ANYBODY BOUGHT ONE I LIKE TO KNOW IF IT WILL THROW A CELL.

If you install these headers, does that mean you're running without a cat? I thought the Pro's primary cat was pretty close to the engine, and I'm looking at those pictures, not seeing anything that looks like a cat welded into the headers.

If these headers do eliminate the primary cat, I would indeed expect a Check Engine Light to come on, because the secondary O2 sensor would be reading essentially unfiltered exhaust. Of course, this is just a guess.

walight01 March-28th-2003 08:20 PM

if you keep the second cat and remount the censors to make it the primary cat, its won't through a CEL.http://www.redshark1.com/phantom.html

ImportUnlimited March-28th-2003 10:59 PM

would it possible to just flip the cats around so the one with the o2 sensor, would be inplace of the second cat. (i have not bothered to look under the car yet, so this is just a theory, plus its pouring rain outside)

walight01 March-28th-2003 11:04 PM

its not worth it, besides the second cat has better flow through it anyways.

both U-LEV catalysts in the newer protege's work together to lower the badness coming out of the tailpipe. I heard that the first primary cat is a little more restrictive than the second. Removing the second will bring the car out of U-LEV compliance but still be street legal. Not sure if the reverse is true. + if the second cat is a very breather friendly high flow one, it could still throw the MIL. If the ECU gets input from the 2nd O2 that the filtered exhuast is out of spec, meaning it is not filtering enough unburned hydrocarbons or whatever else, the magic light everyone loves will appear. I am not sure how well the second cat will work on its own. FWIW Phantom cruiser is using no cats currently, or at least before she got the Racing Beat exhuast. She was using some kind of signal modifier for the O2 sensors...

No, it's not. The bore, bore spacing and cylinder head are the same. The timing belt for the FP-DE has an "FS"-prefix part number! :)The only reason I can think of that would affect the fitment of a header between the two engines is different EGR piping and/or O2 sensors, but both issues are easy to resolve.

(NOTE: I'm not saying that they ARE different, I'm just talking hypothetically here.) :)

I'm not sure about the rods being stronger, but you are correct on this one- the rods and crank are different due to the FP's shorter stroke, and the pistons are different too, probably to keep the c/r the same.

Holy shit, this is the first i've seen an online vendor sell the headers for the 1.6! I'm definitely getting some headers for my car as my next mod. Awesome.

Thanks protetype for showing this page to me....somehow i missed it.

Good find!

I might be the test monkey on a set for the 03. If OBX's are a direct bolt up to the 2nd cat, this would be great. Extending the 2nd O2 behind the 2nd cat would not be a problem.

The 1st O2 appears to be right in the OE cast manifold, so you don't have to try and "fool" it. Only need to fool the 2nd O2 (no biggy.) ;)

Jim

BTW - $269.10 for SS 4-2-1 headers??!! That's a great price!!

Edit: Ahh, to hell with the O2's. I'll use these http://www.ponyexpressperformance.co...liminator.html

They work great (had one on the WRX. ATR catless up, Stromung catless down, Stromung 3rd cat eliminator, no CEL's.) :D

protetype March-30th-2003 09:54 AM

yeah... i'm good at stealing fame. anyway... so i'm curious now since i've been wondering about the obx header for a while. since some of the protege's don't have a secondary cat, this would automatically cause a CEL since it eliminates the primary, and there is no secondary even though the o2 sensor will still be mounted essentially in the same spot, and there is no second sensor. this would be the only reason i wouldnt get these... anyone wanna take a shot at this one, and tell me if this what would happen. ;)

We need to talk to Dan from PonyExpress on the MIL eliminators (I'm almost sure they'll work.) If so, you've got no worries. If not, we're back to square one.
