Nitrous??

Does anyone here have a Nitrous kit installed in their car? If so what type wet vs dry and brand ZEX, NE, NOS? And finally how many shot 55,65,100?

Roddimus Prime December-5th-2004 10:59 PM

based on my previous experience I would go with a ZEX dry kit set only to about a 50hp shot.

If your car has more than 30K miles I'd make sure to get a new fuel filter at the same time and also buy a spark plug that is 1 heat range colder. always make sure to use premium gas when spraying.

I prefer the ZEX because it is one of the safest kits on the market. I've sold and installed several ZEX dry kits and not had ONE problem out of any of them. I've seen several wet kit cars go south in under 5 bottles. The ZEX is NOT the most powerful kit but for that extra kick in the pants it cant be beat.

How much will that usually cost you? How long does a 50 shot last? And does the shot-raiting indicate the HP recieved from it or what? How much to refill? Installation costs? Installation difficulty?

Better yet, let's play 20 questions...

Roddimus Prime December-6th-2004 12:11 AM

Here we go...these questions will be ZEX Dry specific since this is what I know the most about allthough most nitrous systems are fairly similar.

A "50hp shot" indicates the estimated power level gained when spraying. On a ZEX dry kit (most dry kits) you will have a lower power gain than what you are spraying. My 50shot ZEX dry may only make 35whp or so. A wet kit will usually make the wuoted power or more. I've seen a friend with a 75hp wet kit make almost 90whp.

Nitrous refill rates vary from store to store but most stores charge about $3/lb. A 10lb bottle costs me about $30+tax to refill. Local Welding supply stores usually have the best prices since they sell in HUGE volumes.

Cost?? Figure that ImportCarParts has a GB going on here for a zex dry kit for about $450shipped. Thats a GREAT price. Figure another $30 in new plugs and fuel filter and about 4 hours for the install (if you know what you're doing) and thats all you need. If you pay someone else to install it for you expect to pay at least $100...local shops here charge about $150 for nitrous install...sometimes they throw in the first bottle for free.

Installation is not difficult but you should spend some time to plan carefully where you want everything to mount so there are no clearance issues. On a protege a ZEX NMU could mount right near the CAI hole (on the side) and be perfectly positioned.

Jeff, if you're interested in getting a kit let me know and next time I come up we'll meet up and I'll install it all for you.

p.s. I ran a 75-100hp shot on my SHO. I sprayed it maybe once or twice a week on the street and about 15times on saturday night (drag strip)....the bottle would last me 2 weeks easily. As the bottle empties you lose bottle pressure a zex kit will start spraying less and less power. To fix this all you need is a bottle warmer and a pressure guage. bottle pressure should be about 900psi for max power...BUT NO MORE!!

All sorts of accessories are available such as a bottle warmer, purge kit, purge illuminator (if you're a ricer), bottle warmer, amplifier kit (for running more than one bottle on the same set-up), etc...

after getting almost killed today by an suv freaking middle age men, im about to get a nitrous kit for those "get the hell outta my way" passes that my p5 jsut doesnt have

Ok my car has about 50k on it very well maintained though Mobil 1 synthetic every oil change, 93 octane all the time, and I have the NGK Iridium IX plugs. Will those plugs suffice or do I need another?

nando2323 December-7th-2004 12:35 PM

Do you have any suggestions Rod and what nozzle should I use that will be safe for my engine?

Does the the "learning" of the TPS voltage curve really work that well?

to be safe I wouldnt go higher than a 50 shot

nando2323 December-7th-2004 03:09 PM

How about my plugs will they suffice or no?

macdaddyslomo December-7th-2004 03:17 PM

go one range colder

the TPS doesn't have a learning curve. It just registers voltage increase and decrease with throttle position. The ZEX is actually triggered at WOT by splicing into the TPS.

p.s. no more than a 50hp shot.

I meant the ZEX's "learning" of the TPS voltage. It seems like it would be variable based on engine loads.

Roddimus Prime December-7th-2004 07:32 PM

nope. When you install the NMU you have a "test" button to press. you press the button for 3s and it'll start flashing. Once it flashes slowly press the gas pedal to the floor until you hit WOT and then back to nothing. The system is now trained on what WOT is. Engine load has nothing to do with it. The system only has to be armed with the bottle open to be ready to fire. Once you hit WOT it'll start spraying.
