New TSB for 2/7/03 Cold Engine Rattle Noise

Engine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

01-004/03 2001-2003 PROTEGE/PROTEGE5 - RATTLING NOISE AT 1000-3000 RPM COLD ENGINE
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2001-2003 Protege (2.0L FS only)

2002-2003 Protege5

DESCRIPTION
Some customers may experience an engine rattle noise under light to moderate acceleration with engine coolant temperatures below 65 C (149 F) and engine RPMs between 1000 and 2900 RPM.

The noise is the result of the intentional swirl effect that is generated when the Variable Tumble Control System (VTCS) plates in the intake manifold are closed. Swirl accelerates the burn of the air/fuel mixture which reduces emissions when the engine is cold. The noise does not have a negative effect on the engine, and disappears as soon as coolant temperature reaches 65 C (149 F). There is a counter-measure to help reduce the noise in order to improve customer satisfaction.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using one of the following procedures:

REPAIR PROCEDURE
Verify customer concern.

Check vehicle VIN range:

From VIN JM1BJ2***1*400001 to JM1BJ2***2*551281, go to step 3.

From VIN JM1BJ2***2*551282 to JM1BJ2***3*644493, go to step 4.

Replace the VTCS delay valve, then proceed to step 4.

Reprogram the PCM using WDS (Version B22 or later), verify the correct calibration from the table below:

Funny how people moaned and bitched about this problem on the boards for months and months, yet when there's finally a fix nobody seems to care. Anyway, thanks for the info. Much appreciated!

kc5zom February-11th-2003 08:26 PM

I have the fix, it helped a little bit, but the noise is still almost as loud and almost as annoying. So basically it didn't work and my car was in the shop 3 or 4 different times to get that result. I'm moving to the school of thought that says unplug the damn thing. That is the only way I guess I will find any peace.

YellowMP5 February-11th-2003 08:40 PM

my solution:

1) turn on the car.
2) Turn on the music
3) let the car idle for at least 30sec-1min (YOU SHOULD ALWAYS DO THIS ANYWAYS)
4) drive to wherever you need to go and make sure to keep rpms under 3k untill the temperature needle stops rising.
5) after needle stops, ZOOM-ZOOM:D

noise? what noise?

If you unplug it, you WILL get a CEL. I'm going to permanently fix mine and get rid of that damn rattle to boot.

Dermen February-11th-2003 10:46 PM

I have an appointment friday to have this and the clutch chatter fixed.

kc5zom February-11th-2003 10:54 PM

Get ready for a big surprise when they "fix" it.

He might have meant that he would unplug the vacuum diaphram that activates the VTCS plates. I've been running like this forever now with no check engine light.

But if you unplug the electrical connector on the solenoid which activates the vacuum diaphram...hello CEL.

Good to see you back Traveler, I'm drooling over those headers of yours.

I'm taking mine in Saturday. Does anyone have any good news concerning this. So far, it's not sounding too good...

Ditto. It works without issue. TSB my ass..... (no offense chevywolf2, good find.) I'm in no real need of it though. :D

Rattle update

Ive been trying to update my P5's PCM for 2 days now upgraded the WDS 3 times and unable to upgrade to this new calibration. Called tech line they talked to the mazda engineers who said that the Calibration files to update the PCM will not be available for a week or 2 DOH!
I spent over an hour trying to figure out what the hell was up when the WDS told me my pcm was up to date with an old calibration #
So anyway if you guys want to get it updated id wait till i post the damn things avaliable =)
