mp5 shifter extension, and how to remove it?

ok, i was looking at my shifter arm this morning and noticed a extension on the arm. It looks like it comes off, but how would be the best way. i'm looking to shorten the height of the shifter knob, not really concearned about throw. If anyone had done this extension removal please let me know how.

first take out your entire center console along with the leather boot. on the bottom part of the upper extension, you will see 2 holes, you will need to drill these out so a screw driver or a small piece of steel so you can twist with. then take a torch(or goto home depot and get one of those long strinkers for lighting fire places and heat up the the extension. if you want to use the lighter, you gona have to sit there for about 10 min with a constent flame and try to melt the rubber sealent under it. once it gets hot, it will start to give, you have to keep twisting and twisting and keep the heat on until it eventually comes off. if you have access to a torch, it will take like 2 min to do the entire thing. once you get off the extension, there are no threads to put the stock shifter on so either A, you can bet a aftermarket shift know with set screws or take the shifter out of the car, cut part of it off and weld the threads back on. but if you are going to that much trouble, i'd just make a custom short throw shifter as well. all you do is at a piece to thee bottom of the pivot joint to make it longer.
