monsterflow short ram intake
 

Well I received and installed the monsterflow intake and filter on thrusday and I have to say...for only $119 US you can't go wrong...It sounds great..(at least my car sounds fast now even though it isn't ) it look's wicked (chrome intake and huge monsterflow filter) and hell it even feels more powerful..maybe its the growl it makes but either way you can't go wrong..heres the card from the guy i bought it from.

Had mine for about 7 months now and love it. It came with the car as a package here in Calgary w/ leather seats, and a DTM exhaust. I was lucky enough to drive the car with the factory air box as the part was BO, and now with the short ram it "seems" to have a bit more power.

sorry a little add on...

the Miata people have had a lot of luck with this intake. On some of their forums they have some pretty good reviews.

yeah maybe it just "seems" but like i said it sounds good and looks good..and its like 1/2 the cost of the injen..plus i'm supporting Mazda protege racing ;P

opps... when I said "seems" I actually meant that... sorry if it came out wrong. I feel I get a little more bottom end and it does rev easier, doesn't choke out at 5000rpm. Big change since I hit 12,000km. also, the engine has loosened up quite a bit!

Danger To ECU?
 

I've heard horror stories about the MonsterFlow Short Ram. It seems that alot of people have been reporting that with the new Intake, the ECU makes the engine run extremely rough, and even stall under warm temperatures, simply because the air under the hood is far to hot to be sucking into the engine!

I went ahead and got the Injen CAI Intake instead because of this, but as far as increased horespower with the short ram is concerned, sure, you're getting more air, but since it is so hot, are you really getting that much more power? Just something you might definitly want to look into.

also sport compact car is doing on review on a mp3 eqiupped with the monster flow

also you run the risk of water damge with the injen unless ya shell out more money for the water valve thingy..(technical word)
also AEM relaesed the short ram as the cold air injen makes no gains..
I'm not knocking either product at all..
but there were horror stories that the water valve thing fell apart and went into the intake..:eek:

plus its so cold here now
no need to worry about hot temps
and i'm in Newfoundland
it dont get that warm here :)

According to Racing Beat's R&D, the Protege engine didn't respond very well to intakes. I doubt any of them provide any noticable gains. I had the Monsterflow intake installed for over 7 months, and I had no drivability problems with it at all. I've since replaced it with the AEM short ram intake, and I don't notice any difference. The primary cat is probably the biggest restriction to both the exhaust and intake that the intakes won't make much of a difference unless you install headers.

So I've had my MonsterFlow for about 8 months now, and have yet to have (or hear about) any issues with the ECU caused by the intake. Mine came with the car from the dealer, and they have been putting them on Miatas for some time without any problems.
If you go to the Miata forums quite a few people are raving about them, a few Honda ones too.
Generally I think someone who butchers a product is usually trying to sell you something else.

Does it make a difference? Maybe a little... its not a turbo, but I like the idea of a more, smoother, possibly cleaner airflow, and a reuseable filter.
As for heat in the engine bay, test have been done (that I read on this forum) that the wheel well isn't that great for an air intake, and heat is only going to collect in your engine bay when stopped. After a drive I can grab the intake pipe and its quite cool. Stop and go traffic... neither will make a difference.

Is this the same intake you bought? That is a great price, AEM is $199 so it's tough to even compare. I'd just like to see a picture so I know what I'd be purchasing.

I think in the end every intake is pretty much the same. Combined with proper exhaust there may be a 1-2 hp difference but I doubt it.

Hmm, you are very right. May I ask where you ordered your monsterflow intake and filter from? $119 doesn't sound too bad. The HKS is $105 and I'm sure it is good but it doesn't say if I you are just buying a filter or a whole intake pipe. The HKS mushroom filters are neat but I need to replace the stock plastic piping.
Also, the monsterflow intake filters look to be very advanced. Being a velocity stack intake, they calm the airflow before it enters the throttle. That must be what all those blades in the filter head do. I'm sure I sound like some retarded rookie car enthusiast but oh well.:dunno:

So it looks like the protege has many intakes to choose form now. Injen, AEM, MPH, HKS, Monsterflow, plus a few others I can't remember. Looks like the aftermarket is slowly opening for us.

I got it from ebay but just mail the guy above and he may have more..if not he should be able to tell you where to get them..
It was brand new in the box with a can of filter charger cleaner and all accessories..even a decal..I'm very pleased with it for $119 bones.. for sound and looks alone its enough for me :)
