Mobil 1 synth oil at 50,000 miles?
 

I am about to hit my 50,000 mile, out of warranty mark (2001 SE Automatic) and after reading many of the posts here and at a few other places I have decided to load the crank case full of Mobil 1 full synthetic 10W40 oil at 50,000. I have one Mazda oil filter left so will use that. Maybe a better filter next change in 5000 miles or so (Mobil 1 filter?). Any thoughts on this? Am I making a big mistake or am I smart to go ahead with the change to synthetic at this time in my car's life? Any opinions/suggestions are encouraged. Also, I have heard that some after market air filters help improve hp as well as mpg and helps the car run cooler....any thoughts on that?

Too late now...I just did the deed and put Mobil 1 in my car. I test drove it afterwards and seems I can feel a difference...but I also changed the transaxle fluid today and rotated/balanced my tires too so it could be those things or a combination of them. I still would like other's opinions though....and about the air filters.

Nothing wrong with switching to synthetic. Most people notice that their idle is a little smoother or lower and in some cases the engine starts more easily since synthetic is more consistent than dino-oil and will cling to your internals.

You might want to try a drop-in filter from K&N. All you really need to do is clean it with their Recharge Kit once in a while. You don't have to replace it at all. As for oil filters, I don't know a thing about 'em, but use the Mazda one and after that, someone will probably have told you wha ta good brand is.

Yes, you are right...engine starts easier, easier shifting and smoother over-all...also slight increase in HP and mileage....funny thing you mention it but have already ordered a K&N air filter...should be here this week....;)

You must be aware that you have to check your oil level frecuently because whith your mileage you may start to burn some oil, and check for possible oil leaks. If your engine seals are good you should not experience anything wrong. Dino oil builds up deposits/gum that acts like sealants in some places of your engine, synth oils have e very good detergent action and may remove this deposits.
I switched to Mobil 1 with 26.6K miles and i definitely notice a smooth idle and the temperature of my engine drops almost one line.
I uses a K&N drop in air filter and hiperground wiring and that combination (synth, K&N, H/ground) gives me a better throtle response but i do not think more power, or at least not significative. You can use regular oil filters with Mobil 1, no problem man but remenber to replace it every 5000Kms aprox.
Anyway synth is a good choice and helps with K&N air filter because it may permit a bit more dust coming into our engines.

Thanks for your insights from your experience. I will check regularly. By the way, what is hiperground wiring and where do you buy it? If it helps and isn't too expensive I may be interested in it.

In a brand new car all ground connections are pretty well, but with some K miles the ground path become more resistive and is useful to wire an extra points under the hood in order to restore the ground path conductivity. Sensors will perform better.

Very interesting...had never heard of that. Does it really improve engine torque and the other things it claims it does?

Do not believe everything.
Do a search in the forum, there are a lot of information about it and remenber be esceptic.

Figured as much but haven't found anything negative about it doing a web search. Can make one yourself...might try that the next time I have spare time and can buy the part...my understanding is a bunch of Monster cable and ends with a crimper would work for that....now, where to anchor the ends...any help here?

About the oil, I use Amsoil 5w30. The local turbo/performance shop recommened this weight and said that the heaviest they would use in a 4cyl with DOC is 10w30. They also said they use 0w30 in their cars. I have 20K on the car since Feb. Switched to full syn. in 3 oil changes. I love Amsoil and with a drain interval of 25K miles you can almost forget about it!!
