Miata and Escort?

I just came to the realization that my wife's 2001 Miata has the same engine as a Ford Escort.:tear: :wtf:
:bsflag:

2003ProtegeES Feb 10, 2003 01:09 AM

Thats just plain sad and unacceptable! This almost makes me want to throw up!

A miata has a 1.8 liter mazda built engine. An escort(when they were still making escorts anyway) had a 2.0 L engine. How are these the same?

eggynatey Feb 10, 2003 01:49 AM

Ignorant? Are you saying that I'm wrong?(I hope)
I was just reading the David Avard thread in the "motorsports" forum and the newspaper article says that the Mazda BP-18 engine powers the Miata, Protege, Ford Escort/Tracer and the Kia Sephia.(?!) Maybe you meen that I'm ignorant for not already knowing that.
I may not wanna know this, but enlighten me...
What other cars does my 2.0 reside in?

Mach 1 Feb 10, 2003 01:52 AM

What exactly is your problem anyway? If Ford used a Mazda engine in an escort, who gives a shit and how is that going to affect your life at all?

Maybe ignorant is the correct description....

eggynatey Feb 10, 2003 01:57 AM

Dont get your panties all wadded up.
I'm just not stoked that my wife paid $17,000 for a car with the same engine that's in a $8,900 car. Plus I was bored and awake.:)

Mach 1 Feb 10, 2003 02:03 AM

Bullshit and WTF sounds to me like your the one with the panties all wadded up....lol.

Anyway, what year escort did your wife pay $17K for as compared to what year miata that costs $8.9K?

Im not sure Im following you...

She's got the '87 Rice-Krispy special with the dual chrome Starbucks exhaust tips and Vornado supercharger with the matching gold hub-caps & dash-topper. :dj:
Why do you ask?

Well, for one thing, the 2001+ Miata has variable valve timing, a better cylinder head, solid lifters, totally different intake and exhaust manifolds, higher compression pistons and hotter cams than the 90-96 Escort/Protege motor. FWIW I fail to see the problem with sharing it. The BP's a really nice engine, and it's stronger when turboed than any other Jap engine sent to this country in the last 20 years without a turbo already attached. :D Look at it this way... the Vette uses the same basic engine offered in a $17,000 stripped Chevy full-size pickup, but does this mean that a Z06 sucks?

To answer your other question, your 2.0L engine is shared with the 93-98 Mazda MX-6 and Ford Probe and the 93-02 Mazda 626, although the Protege version has several significant upgrades.

Thanks for the history lesson. I'm really not all that bummed,
I was just venting my eggy-ness(hence the name)
Look at the guy! He's in the third gen engine forum telling us how much of a piece of shit our motors are...right on!
Shouldn't you be participating in a Toyota forum? Your Protege's gone...let it go.

ZoomZoomH Feb 10, 2003 12:39 PM

don't forget that the Kia Sportage's engine is in the same family as the 3rd gen's F-series engine!!!

go Kia!

Thats retarded. There are only a few people on this forum that truly know what the fuck they are talking about, Jesse is one of them. I am glad he stayed. If he didn't the vigourous attack of ignorant ill conceived false information would reign victorious, and too many good people would also believe that a Protege and a Focus have the same engine.

Jesse, this is a little off the subject but a friend of mine asked about this. Is it true that the BP was considerably heavier than the FS. We both know that it is extremely strong, but is it extremely heavy or just average. Also what is a BP's bottom end strength compared to a SR20DE? I have another Nissan fanatic friend that claims its stronger, but I don't know a whole lot about either engine.

look at the *other* forums ;)

Sorry for the remark, psuedo reality...I coudn't help myself, If I see an opening, no matter how low, I gotta take it! lol
I never said Focus, THAT would be ill conceived; I said Escort. And you guys are right, It doesn't matter which car it's in, it's a good motor.
I guess that in these days of platform-sharing, any well built engine will find it's way into more than one car. So it's kind of a testament to the quality of the motor that it's in all those cars.;peace;
