Mazdaspeed Engine

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there would be a big difference that would require major modification to swap the engine from my p5 to a mazdaspeed engine. Arent they the same engine just the mazdaspeed has a turbo and is maybe built up to take the boost????? :blue:

also i am kinda new to the forums (as far as posting ive been reading posts for a while) so hi everyone

Hi, and welcome to our forum Anarchy.

The Mazdaspeed engine is the same the 2.0L 16v FS-DE engine employed in the Protege,Protege5 and Protege MP3. The engine was not built up for in anyway for the turbo. The compression ratio remains at the stock 9:1. Hence, no major modifications are necessary to swap in a MSP engine into a P5.

The MSP does however have a helical LSD as well as a thicker driveshaft and a heavy duty clutch to better withstand the additional power.

I'm not totally certain of the above, but yuo can refer to the "Protege FAQ" for additional information.

The Calliway developed turbo for the MSP as of yet is not sold to the public.

That pretty much sums it up...

The Mazdaspeed, like the MP3 FS and unlike the ES or P5, has a different valve cover to incorporate a black plastic engine cover but other than that nothing engine wise has change.

If you were going to somehow get an entire MSP engine and place it in another protege you would also need the raidiator I believe aside from the mentioned differences. Also the ECU is mapped for more fuel delivery at WOT from what I have heard...

One word: SPOOL ;)
Unless you're worried about warranty, the spool turbo will give you more power than a MSP. You'll save about $17,000, and still have the better looking P5.

Buying the engine or any other part of the turbo system from Mazda is next to impossible.

Mazda is only supplying dealers with MazdaSpeed parts based upon a correct VIN (MazdaSpeed VIN) AND RETURN of the original part.

In other words, unless you have a MazdaSpeed, you ain't getting the engine parts for it. Even if you knew someone with an MSpeed, just using the VIN is not going to work either. I'm still questioning why Mazda would do such a thing, and prevent all of us from having a factory-"authorized" turbo setup, but this is how it is.

Finding a wrecked MSpeed or using an aftermarket turbo is going to be your only viable option.

thanks

thanks for the help guys i was just thinking of the msp engine cuz it is a mazda engine and that just seems better than modding the crap out of my engine. plus it would be original as i have never heard of anyone doing this mod (yet). also, im not really looking to get that much power but i will be looking into other things before i spend that much money on a new engine (if i can find one).

Mazda is doing this to preserve the Mazdaspeed name. You think you're pissed off... wait until the Miata owners learn the supercharger from the Mazdaspeed Miata (being introduced at the New York show) won't be available. Of course, they already have numerous forced induction options.

Yup, its all about exclusitivity. Look what happened to the Integra Type R.

I just hope that the exclusivity doesn't cause a repeat of one of the main problems with the Type-R... theft. :( In my area (North Texas) ITR's tend to spontaneously disappear if you park them outside. The street price of an ITR drivetrain is so high that you can't safely park an ITR anywhere but in your own garage.

Nope...... he's not going to save any money......

Take the cost of a fully loaded P5.... 16,000$..... add the cost of the turbo....... and where's the money going to come from for the LSD, better audio, better handling, nicer interior, exclusivity, etc, etc.......

Installshield February-19th-2003 11:04 PM

Yeah very true... There are only 3 or 4 true Type R's that I have seen in my area, and one of which I know of being locally owned. He litteraly locks it in his garage with 2 (yes two!!) wheel boots and a padlocked engine hood "locker" or something. He has owned since new from '99 and 11 attempts of theft have been made that he was aware of. One time he claims a hot college girl tryed to distract him while her other friend tryed to slip into the drivers seat unnoticed, luckily the keys were still in his hand...

He's already got the P5...I meant that the only way to get a MSP engine is to buy the whole car. But you're right. I didn't factor in the LSD, audio and other cool stuff the MSP has. :)

I have LSD in my MP 5. I installed it myself. It took 3 hours with air tools. My car worked well in the snow. The only downside was the Dunlop tires. But I made it through fine. The Dunlop kick ass on the track. (not quarter mile track). But in snow and hard ass rain they suck.
I got mine from a wrecked 323 gtx with just FWD. It has a g-series transaxle. I bought the whole transaxle which I was going to put into my 91 escort gt which I shot all 4 valves into piston 1. I was racing a corvette. I had him by 2 car lengths and my motor blew up. I was all motor. My fastest time was 13.4@101 MPH.

Anyways I pulled the LSD from that ransaxle and placed it into my MP5. It cost me 75.00 bucks. I had to pull it myslef but its worth it if you do your homework.

Also there was an earlier 626/mx6 it had an AWD 2.0 liter turbo fs motor. I would say the car was 1982 to 1988. I wish I took eveything from that car before it got crushed. I did not know I was getting my protege 5. Oh Well.
