Mazda Protege Auto Transmission Clunk

DESCRIPTION of problem:
===================
car: 1999 Mazda protégé ES at 27,000 miles

when I am going around 35 mph - usual speed around town and then coast to astop, there is a slight whirr(sound of spinning) and a clunk from the the transmission.

I have not heard it if I brake hard...but hear it everytime when I coast (CTP + lightly braking) to a stop..usually at the traffic lights and stop signs and there is a slight tug forward associated with the clunk.

"Dealer's master technician took a drive with me and he declared that the clunk is from the 2-1 gear shift - nothing to worry about. The 2-1 gear shift occurs at the 0-3 mph speed (that is the speed when the clunk is heard)." ???
I think it's the 3-1 downshift, not 2-1 that happens at this speed

Latest updates to the problem:
======================
I took my car back to the dealer for the transmission clunk when downshifting to 1st gear during a coasting stop. Fortunately or unfortunately(you decide), the mazda rep was also present. He took a ride with me and declared it a very normal characteristic of the car.

The dealership work does ATF test & tells me that the "Line pressures" are within specifications.

currently car has 41,000 miles and 37 months (out of warranty), but has Mazda Extended warranty for 100,000 miles.

Anybody has any precious inputs that can help me?

I don't have that problem!
of course they are going to say it is normal so they don't have to fix it under warranty......

Well, the fluid may be fine and the line tests could pass, but that doesn't necessarily mean there is no problem. You know your car well since you drive it all the time, so that definitely indicates something different if you've just started feeling the clunk.

You may want to go to a couple of other dealerships to see what they say. Lastly, if they are all telling you that it's "normal" and you know it isn't, get an independent shop that you can trust test it, then go back to Mazda armed with that information.

I kind of have a similar problem with an 04 Mazda 3 auto trans. When I am driving above 20-25 and coasting it makes this noise. When the slightest bit of pressure is applied to the gas the noise goes away. Anyone have an idea what it might be? I asked a mechanic and he said it wasn't an issue but if it got worse fast then bring it in to have the transmission rebuilt. Can anything be done other than rebuilding the tran. or might this be another issue?
