Mazda 3 performance question

The 3rd gen. Protege 1.6L sedan has a torque of 14.8Kg-m, The Mazda 3 hatchback 1.6L 145Nw-m (14.8Kg-m) both at 4000RPM.
an both 105HP but protege 1.6L @ 5500RPM and Mazda 3 105HP @6000RPM. (If i am not wrong)
Where is the gain with the new generation engines?. We know it has Variable Intake System (VIS), Swirl control valve, Variable timing and so... This could help with low emissions, better fuel economy and definitely better performance but where is it, if the numbers says other thing? and i forgot hatchback is weigther. OK the sedan must be a bit ligther. What do you thing guys?
(speaking abouth engine!)

Regards
