Looking for performance filter for M3 1.6L
 

I'am looking for a good perfromance filter for my 2005 1.6 L Automatic. I run on 98 octane fuel. Its a bit sluggish. I checked with K&N & so far they only have a drop in replacement filter. I'am looking for something with a cone type with a heat shield. Anyone know of any website that sell these.

To answer your questions:

#1. 98 octane in a stock 1.6L automatic? That's why you're sluggish. The car is designed for much lower octane. Higher octane fuel actually slows combustion and prevents complete burning. Run the lowest octane you can get away with until you add boost or nitrous.

#2. depending on your set-up you can purchase a generic cone filter and mount it on your car yourself. It's not real difficult.

#3. not real sure about your specific model but I know "HiBoost" makes a 1.6L turbo kit as does "Wagner Motorsports". These have been proven to make HIGH power numbers (300+)

Matty he is from overseas apparently...he has a Mazda 3 with a 1.6L MZR series engine....totally different engine than the 1.6L ZM-DE found in 3rd gen protege's

I agree about the 98 octane...where are you getting that ??? That's practically race fuel

wait...i just re-read the title of the thread....i'm wrong here...he's only looking for a performance "FILTER". oops..

I'll say this. The type of filter is not nearly as important as the condition of the filter.

The best filter i've ever seen are the Apexi 3" cone filters...they are very expensive though. about $130usd.

He probubly needs the intake as well to mount the filter on to.
The mazda 3's use the zm maf so you could probubly get away with getting a zm / old 1.6l intake and using it, short ram, actually you could probubly just use the mazda 3 generic intakes off ebay they should fit with almost no modification the engine is basicly the same as the 2.0 and 2.3.

The mazda 3 1.6l mz is basicly the same as the zm but its mounted backwards, and spelled backwards ;P interesting.

hardly....zm has different compression ratios and doesnt utilize variable valve timing...and those are just the obvious differences

Actually you're probably pretty familiar with how the 1.6L MZR works...it's basically the same engine as what was in your wife's 2.3L Mazda 3...it's just smaller

oh ok...wow, de-stroking from 2.3L to 1.6L is nuts!! gotta change bore, stroke, piston height (probably) etc..

I liked the new 2.3L engines...just wish it was in a new focus body...if you guys haven't seen the new foci get some AMAZING parts...also, most of their FI kits are superchargers....wonder why that would be.....hmm.

well , they arent that close....it is a different block...just same basic engine design and operation...plastic intake manifold facing the front, variable valve timing, high compression, etc

Thanks for the help guys. I realy didnt know that higher octane would make the car sluggish. I live in Dubai - United Arab Emirates. We get 95 & 98 octane. I opted for the latter thinking its the best that i can get. May be i'll try switching to 95 % & see if there is any difference. I dont want to turbo or NOS. All i need is a DIY ( do it yourself kit) with a cone filter . As i said that K&N make a drop in one. I had a K&N cone filter on my 1994 318is BMW. It sounded great & i could feel the difference when u floored it.

i'll try & get a picture of the engine bay .There seems to be a confusion on what engine i have.

gas will make a difference, but the the main reason your feeling sluggish is becuase you have a 1.6 liter, not to be a dick or anything after all size does not matter ts how much you enjoy it right. the power to weight in a 3 with a 1.6 just cant be performance at all, but i bet it gets good gas mileage
