Long time between oil changes

I just purchased an '01 DX with the 1.6 and from several indicators, it looks like the oil hasn't been changed in about 22000 miles. My question is what should I do, in addition to the obvious..change the oil? The oil that came out was very black and had a strong odor but flowed pretty good. Thanks BB

I would buy a can of motor flush from autozone....put it in your engine oil and drive on it for about 15 minutes. Then change the oil again. The motor flush will wash out any gunk and debris that might be trapped inside. Also, the rule of thumb when it comes to changing oil: You can never hurt your car by chaning the oil more often than required but going without will hurt it.

Do the motor flush and then change your oil every 2K miles for the next 4-6K miles...you should be fine.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks Matt
