limited-slip differential upgrade

Any way to upgrade third gen Proteges to the limited-slip differential from the open differential?

Phantom Grip seems to make a kit only for a 91 Protege, and Quaife (sp?) makes them up to 2001 but there is no price quote on those. And, how difficult of an install or upgrade is it?

Is this a good idea in general?

Quiafe makes LSD's for the F-type tranny (99+ 1.6L and 1.8L) and G-type tranny (01+ 2.0L), and Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development sells them. You can also install the OEM LSD from the MSP in the G-type tranny, and it costs a lot less than a Quiafe. No LSD is available for any Protege automatic tranny.

Installation requires the removal and teardown of the tranny, so it is NOT a bolt-in project- taking trannies apart requires special tools and a good deal of skill. IMHO, an LSD is definitely a good idea because our cars have too much inside wheelspin coming out of tight corners. :D

quaife LSD is about $1350 for either f or g series tranny.

I guess I'm out of luck with my auto tranny :)

LSD isn't needed.

lmao....:D ...that was actually pretty funny

Good point! Speaking of the MSP LSD. I've seen the price is about $450. Has anyone gotten a quote for the install? I'm interested as I'm getting sick of wheel hop on tight corners (there are 2 on my way to work) and wheel spin on rainy days (not that Southern CA has very many of those, but even so). Not to mention that more traction is always a good thing. Every car SHOULD come stock with an LSD IMHO.

One more thing. Would it be a benifit (from a labor standpoint) to change the clutch at the same time? In other words, would it be easy for an installer to change the clutch while he's in there?

quaife is the sh*t its about $1,500 at corksports.com

That'd be the time to do it! :D

you should chang the clutch at the same time but if your going to chang the clutch you should do the flywheel too:D

I agree that the LSD is great idea. I bought mine about 7 months ago, but have not installed it. I know I should let the dealer or someone else do it, But I cant resist doing it myself. Its not like I cant buy a used 1500 mile tranny from ebay for $400. If I mess it up. Ill get to it after surgery. (brokened my back).........Duncan
