intake question
 

I got a question i am fixing to make a custom intake for the 1.6 3rd gen engine i have heard that it needs to be 2.5 in pipe all the way through but i want to use 3 in pipe then use a reducer all the way up the maf sensor i am using a cut up airbox for the maf sensor holder. please answer this question because i am fixin to start ordering the parts now.

well i am trying to keep this custom intake in the low bucks range and i was oging to cut up a civic intake it with filter and all the shit. an dstill going ot us ethe rubber part the come from teh throttle body to the maf sensor then put the 3 in pipe form the maf sensor to the filter. i can get a civic intake kit for like 40 bucks on ebay so tat kinda good.

you need 2.5" pipe to get the best possible gains. The 3" civic pipe will work fine, but not at full potential and you can actually lose power in certain rpm ranges.

JC Whitney has universal 180degree mandrel bent pipes for like $25. Then get some hi-temp heat spray. (spray both inside and outside) a few 2.5" to 2.5" silicone adapters and your at the same price as the civic intake, but with the right size pipe.

Hey, not everybody knows everything, and I do know physics quite well might I add, but I don't know much about intakes or exhaust or how the engine works, so that's why people like me like to talk to people like you that know more so that one day we can be people like you talking to people like me educating them, no need to start dissing people.

So 3" pipe produces less HP than 2.5" pipe.

Sounds good to me, but if you soooo sure this is a fact, back it up with dyno charts. If you have them, COOL! If not then you might want to mention that you just restating (and defending quite vigilantly) that somebody, told somebody you knows, brother that 3" pipe sucks!

For all the cornballs who feal that bigger is not better or whatever,,,, I am using a CIVIC INTAKE ON MY SECOND GEN ,,, and I have no problems , so ummm what is wrong ,,,

and the damn thing is louder than any protege intake I have had ,
go ahead and use the civic intake ,,, they cost less and are good quality and guess what ,,, " They Cost Less

Well, i am using a 3" Weapon-R intake THAT WAS DESIGNED FOR THE PROTEGE and it plain sucks!!!!!! (no pun intended)

Especially on your 1.5L engine, i would think you'd want ALL the extra power you can get. Sure with the Civic intake you won't have any problems, but not as much power than a 2.5" tube. Doesn't sound like much, but good for 2-3WHP more than the 3" tube :D

Wow thats a lot of info. Thanks! Please pardon me if I dont know my Mazda engine heritage, but werent these tests based on engines produced 10 years ago or more? Do you think they still apply to the current generation of 2.0L engines with stiffer airflow requirements? After all, creating more horsepower is all about making an engine, essentially a pump, more efficient. Do you think that just maybe the current breathing requirements may have reached the breakover where 3" pipe would create more horsepower? It seems like mazda has come a long way with intake manifolds since then...

While thats a VERY good question, even the new Injen intake for the G3s is 2.5" piping.

I would think, even with the improved (or maybe not???) intake manifolds etc... the velocity of air still moves better with 2.5" on the 4cyl Mazda engines.

The only way you'll know for sure, is to dyno each set up, BUT DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE just the intake pipes. I would bet the 2.5" will have the better results.

was that the complete intake? TB to MAF to filter? or just MAF to filter?

if it was just MAF to filter, then i would probably agree with you, as the more volume of air you can suck up with the filter and cram into the MAF the better, of course up to a certain point, i'm sure a 5" pipe would not work too well :D it's the metered air after the MAF (or VAF for G1) that really counts.

I agree with Jesse's thoughts. I'm a newbie to mods. Everyone's 2 cents are nice and all, but when it gets down to whether I should buy something or do something a certain way, I want to hear from the people who know their stuff and have done the mods before. But let's not forget, we're all family here, keep the love.

Well I have done and made all of the intakes that I could have possibly made ,, I mean you can ask anyone that is on egroups , who knows me or has seen my car ,, either from the canam meet or where ever , I have had multiple intake set ups for the 1.5L and the civic intake has worked the best ,,, no engine light probs ,, no nothing ,, I mean the sound is awesome , the power is great , I mean if these damn things work so great on civics wich make so much power then ummm why can't they work on our cars that need power,,,
my next project is to create a eclipse intake or something of the sort ,, of cold air variety ,. and just do it up like that and then freak it ........
For those of you who can afford dyno's well go ahead ,, only person I have seen posting dyno's is Braden and in my honest opion his car is making the kinda numbers that it would be worth laying the money down for a dyno
