I'm wondering...

I know the Focus 2.0 liter and the Mazda motor are different. But are there any similarities??

I'm mainly wondering what tranny is in the Focus? I'm really wondering if the SVT Focus tranny will bolt up to the FS-DE motor?

Nobody has done it probably so the answer is most likely, "Nobody knows."

I'm just wondering if it'll fit.

Ok, from my sources, the tranny in the SVT is totally separate from the regular focus, which is totally separate from the pro. I guess the svt tranny is a getrag 6-speed, if that helps. I don't think it's compatible at all. Hope this helps a little.

Yeah it helps and doesn't. If the getrag six-speed isn't specially made for the Focus, then it should fit into the Protege with an adapter plate to mount to the motor.

That would also mean that I would have to get custom axles and maybe even hubs...

StuttersC April-28th-2002 08:48 PM

I'm working on that...And if I had the white back ground you wouldn't have even noticed...:p

Don't forget the starter, shifter linkage, #4 engine mount (attaches to the tranny) and possibly the clutch hydraulics. If the Focus 6-speed uses a cable clutch (I dunno) you will have to remove the stock hydraulics and custom-fabricate a cable connection to the clutch pedal.

Add this to the fact that you can't exactly walk into your local speed shop and order a bellhousing to bolt an FSD to this tranny, and you have quite a project on your hands :D

That's what I kind of figured would happen...

The 6 speed in the SVT Focus is a special application for it only. It has two output shafts, and operates almost like two seperate 3 speeds. If I remember correctly, SCC wasn't that crazy about the gear ratio shifts with the two different output shafts.

Either way, I'd rather try and use the standard 5 speed from the Focus and get the Quaife LSD for it for $600.

Yeah, the gear ratios are all screwed up on the Focus SVT....however, isnt the tranny itself a Getrag piece? If so, its Ford's fault for not deciding on good ratios.

Yeah. Getrag is in charge of building that transmission (or at least the design). But, Fords engineers probably did choose the ratios. The transmission is a little freaky but I don't think people should be knocking the ratios until they've taken the car for a little spin.

I was just passing on SCC's comment on the transaxle. I haven't driven it myself, so keep that in mind. Most of the article praised what the SVT team was able to do with the engine and susepension, so I imagine you'd notice that more with a test drive than you would the tranaxle gearing. It does seem like a great value for the money, if you can get past it's looks that is.

SVT used two output shafts so that they could use the same transmission case. Same exact dimensions, but were still able to add another gear. And SCC did say the gears sucked on the SVT Focus.
